From my (admittedly limited) reading and experience, setting lower upload speeds makes it harder to get the best possible download speeds. It can also make it harder to keep connected to peers.

After reading about this on another help forum somewhere, I tried removing the limits from my upload speed. I soon noticed a significant improvement in my download speeds. Before, the most promising peers often dropped out and I didn't know why. Now more of them stay connected and my downloads are heading toward completion much more steadily than before.

It seems the torrent protocol is designed to reward us for allowing higher upload speeds. I hope this helps you.

Yes, my upload speed almost always seems to look higher than my download speed, but it was already looking that way when I was trying to strictly limit my upload speed.

My download speeds are now staying higher than they ever would before. It doesn't bother me if others seem to be getting more from me than I get from them. If my downloads go faster than they did before, a higher upload speed is a small price to pay.

Judging by the question in your topic heading, I thought you might take the same view.

Sometimes, though, without proper QoS/traffic shaping, allowing uploads to "roam free" could choke download speeds, and even general web browsing speeds of the entire network.
