encryption method does any good?

Wed Oct 11, 2006 9:27 pm
can someone please explain in normal english.. what and how encryption method can do good while downloading torrent? does it make any diff with or without it? i tried both ways but did not see much diff

using ktorrent 2.0.3 getting much better performance than previous version and its connecting more peers than ever. basically i use bittornado but ktorrent's this version doing good job at this moment.

It only matters when your ISP is throttling the BitTorrent protocol.

More info.

"Encrypted only" does you good if:
- your ISP is throttling your connection

Both encryption and normal connections does you good if:
- you ISP is not throttling your connection
This is because some peers could deliver you a much higher speed if they use encryption. Where on the other hand, when you do encryption only, you're likely to not be able to connect to "some part" of the other peers in swarm. So it's best to let the other side deside here to get the best of both.

we have an option in ktorrent to use protocol encryption and allow uncrypted connection. so is it safe to just tick both of them!? or we should only use encryption when isp throttles the connection?

Yeah it's safe to do both settings, no matter whether your ISP is throttling your connection not. I even recommend setting both options when your ISP is not throttling.

Use upload limit of 13. It's not very smart to use no upload limit since it can hog your connection.

Another suggestion is to look into wondershaper, an easy-to-use script for setting up traffic shaping. With wondershaper, you can set the upload limit to unlimited, and the network stack will automatically throttle/prioritize it for you so that heavy uploads do not affect download speed, or web browsing/SSH response times or pings.

If your ISP is throttling you and you allow non encrypted connections, those connections will be throttled, If you get some data out of them I guess it can't hurt, even though they will be slower
