Download does not start :(

Fri Oct 27, 2006 6:15 pm
Hi all.

I've installed kubuntu few days ago and today I tried to use kTorrent but everytime I try to download it just stops at the beginning. I'm behind a router but I don't know which ports shall I configure.

Anyone could give me a hand?

Best regards

(Sorry about my poor english )

Normally the port number shouldn't matter. Though there are some ISP's who try to limit bandwidth on some known p2p ports, so that's where another port could work better for you.
If you happen to choose another port, it's recommended to choose a port which isn't and also will not be registered to any application in the near future by definition. These ports are the so called Dynamic/Private ports and are in the range 49152-65535. (choosing: the more random the better)

I still have another doubt.

When I configure the router there are two ways of setting a port: UDP and TCP. In this screenshot I don't know which of those two ports shall I configure and which are TCP or UDP.

Maybe the first one is TCP and the second one is UDP?

Thank you

The normal port for incoming connections (porto: 6881 here) is TCP.
The incoming port for UDP-tracker (porto de UDP do localizador: 4672 here) is UDP. Port for DHT (on the general/Geral tab) is UDP too.

I've set 3 ports:

57319 with TCP
53791 with UDP
57183 with UDP.

I put the first one as port for incoming connections.
The second one as UDP-tracker.
And the third one as DHT.

I still can't download anything.

What's wrong? :(

I always get "Resposta inválida" (Invalid answer) from Estado do localizador (tracker status).

Have you forwarded these ports from the router to your computer which is running KTorrent? Maybe the log give you some hints, it's in /home/webgod/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/log

EDIT
Invalid awnser, hmm, is the tracker working when you run the torrent in another client?

Yes I forwarded them to this computer with the correct IP. The log has a lot of messages with: "Error : Port '6881' is blacklisted, use another port" but I already changed it a few trys ago.

What more can I do?

PS: If i type ip addr at konsole I can see my IP, right?

PS2: Answering your edition: I will try it on my desktop PC. I will tell you something in the next minutes.

Try to restart the torrent or even KTorrent first.

You could check whether the tracker is working, either by web, wget or just another client. But it's probably the new port which isn't used yet. (because you already started the torrent before you changed ports?)

ifconfig
(but i see ip addr works here as well)

- Everytime I set up new ports I restart kTorrent.

- I tried the torrent 1 minute ago, with another program using Windows XP and it worked just fine!

- I checked my ip and it's correct.

Have you tried stopping the torrent, and restarting KTorrent? Maybe the new set ports aren't in effect yet.

EDIT
I see, you have version 2.0.3 right?

I wonder if kTorrent supports all kind of torrents that request login. Maybe that's it? Just speculating..

Hmm, well, seeing the tracker tells you in log about port 6881, the tracker somehow still thinks you're listening on port 6881.
Did you quit a session without event=stopping it maybe? If so, wait the tracker announce time before re-trying again.

EDIT
OK, good to see it's working now :)
