All is ok now. I downloaded the Beta version that did not istall but it had a geoip.dat file, my file was GeoIp.dat, I first copied the GeoIp.dat file to the directory that did not work. So I copied the geoip.dat and that worked. Thank you for your help. (Capitals might be important)

This is not a bug... The included GeoIP database is licensed incompatibly with the Debian Free Software Guidelines, which in turn makes the entire KTorrent package unsuitable for main inclusion. Rather than moving KTorrent into the restricted repository, we opted to instead strip off the GeoIP database in the Ubuntu packages.
The package is still compiled with GeoIP support, but the database itself is not being distributed. So, you can always go in and put your own GeoIP database in. |

I was wondering about this as well until I saw this thread. On my FC6 box, ktorrent displayed the countries and flags of peers whereas under Ubuntu this wasn't the case. However, simply copying the geoip.dat file and the .pngs from /usr/share/apps/ktorrent/geoip under Fedora to Ubuntu solved that.

I have built Geo IP support into a Gentoo system (so I know a little about how this works) but am a new Kubuntu user and I am truly a fish out of water in working with Debian. Could someone who's got GeoIP working with Kubuntu 6.10 post some simple instructions on how to do the GeoIP installation? FWIW, I google'd for instructions on how to do this in Kubuntu, but it didn't work;
After completing the install I'm still seeing "N/A" in the "country" field. Just to clarifiy things for those of us using 2.0.3, it would appear that the recommended Kubuntu 6.10 / Debian installation procedure for GeoIP fails to work properly with ktorrent. Is this because Ktorrent looks for a file name that is different (in a case-sensitive way) than the file supplied by the GeoIP installation procedure? Can you tell me the proper filename and path for the data file so that I can manually perform the install of the data file? Finally, if this is a bug, where do I need to go to report it? Thanks again for your help. |

Well, since I don't have GeoIP working on an existing RedHat installation, the recommendation to copy from a Red Hat install to a Debian install wasn't the most helpful solution. Suffice it to say that after spending the requisite amount of time beating my head into the wall there was no way that I could get GeoIP to work with Ktorrent 2.0.3 on Debian. It works fine with 2.1-rc1 though. Thanks. For anyone else who may be needing help in this regard, do this: 1. Install GeoIP using the following command:
2. Download the new betas and install them using the following command:
That should take care of things. |
