Another Settings Question

Thu Jan 04, 2007 5:04 pm
Hello,

I'm new to KTorrent, and torrenting in general. I have a few questions about my setup.

Sys Specs:

AMD 64b (using 32-bit kernel due to driver limitations)
1GB RAM
KDE 3.5.5-0.2 (Fedora Core 6)
KTorrent 2.1beta1 (don't know how to use svn so I don't have a newer version)
Connection: Cable 5Mbs/2Mbs (at least that's what I'm paying for)
Linksys wireless router WRT54G (firmware v. 3.0.3)

Settings:

Let me caveat this by saying I'm trying to pump out as much data as I can when I'm not using my connection (night time) without crippling my downloads so I think (if I'm understanding them correctly) I'm being pretty liberal with the settings

Wide Open (night time):

Max DL: 0
Max UL: 10 (currently this because I can't seem to figure out how to change these settings based on the schedule)
Max Connects/Torr: 35 (Is this for downloads? Does more connects = better?)
Max Global Connects: 350 (same question as above)
Max Upload Rate: 0
Max DL Rate: 0
Num Upload Slots: 5 (think I read this is for uploads, currently at 5 because I can't change with schedule)
Max Ratio: 0.00

Checked the box for seeding after download complete

In General section DL BW is 5000 and UL BW is 2000.

Using DHT, using encrypted protocol, and allowing unencrypted connections.

In Advanced mem usage is med, 2s update.

Daytime Use:

Max Upload Rate: 50
Max DL Rate: 50

Tightening the Belt:

Max Upload Rate: 25
Max DL Rate: 25

So, am I using the right settings for this thing, or am I screwing it up in a way that it's killing my connection and not being as productive as it could be?

Problems:

With the above Daytime setup, my connection is pretty much useless for anything else, even with QoS setup on my router for my wife's PC (her MAC address has high priority, and across the network ports 6881 and 4444 have low priority). She can't do much of anything network related, and neither can I. I didn't expect this because I thought my bandwidth would be ample.

Even when I throttle it back to 25 Kps up and down, the connection is really full. Are there some overhead issues here I'm not aware of?

It seems like I have to forward the ports with my router even though I'm using the UPnP plugin and my router is set to allow UPnP.

KTorrent spikes CPU usage regularly (about once a minute), getting in the 80%+ range. I also get a lot of CPU usage fluctuation, and it regularly uses 20%+. Not sure if this is a settings problem.

When I close KTorrent, and then open it again, some of the uploads (seeds) that were previously managed by the QM have reverted to user. I can consistently reproduce this.

Question(s):

Probably a feature request, but is there a way to configure the scheduler so I can change the max DL's, Seeds, Connections, etc... based on the schedule? Right now all I see is up/down speed.

Feature Request:

Make a "top of list" and "bottom of list" button in the Queue Mgr so users can push stuff up/down quickly.
