i have the same experience as above. ktorrent is MUCH SLOWER than other clients. i've compared ktorrent to Bittornado on numerous occasions and everytime Tornado is at least 2 to 3 times faster d'load than ktorrent -- it's not even close.

ktorrent seems unable to maintain a steady d'load rate and gyrates wildly up and down. ktorrent has nice features and user interface, it doesn't crash, and CPU usage is very moderate .. BUT performance is abysimal compared to other clients. since the comparisons are all using the same OS, hardware and settings, i can only assume something is flawed in ktorrent, ie, it can't smoothly d'load from peers. uploads are smooth, but not d'loads.

Strange, when I start comparing to other clients, I don't notice much difference between KT and other clients.

Anyway, maybe I can improve the jitters somewhat

OK, I have made some improvements to the networking code, which seems to increase speed stability.

Could somebody try out latest SVN so I can have some idea on how this impacts download speed.

Are these latest improvements only for ktorrent 3.* and KDE4?

I'd like to try it but i only have KDE3.5.

i think my problems with download speed were because i was using ktorrent 2.0.3, which is the default version currently in debian stable. upgrading thru SVN to ktorrent 2.2dev seemed to make a world of difference... much faster and smoother d'load speeds. there must of been some major improvements in the d'load engine because it behaves entirely like a new client. also 2.2dev has a lot more features that were missing in the old version. so i'm going to be using KT a lot more more now. keep up the good work.

Have this changes been included in the 3.1.2 release or do you still need someone to test the svn build on this matter?

Thanks, I visit this page frequently and have already reduced the amount of peers per torrent which helped me a little. With the new version of Ktorrent speeds are fine for me. There is just one thing that still bothers me. I encounter frequent and enormous drops of downloadspeed. Its a constant up and down on a random interval. I don't know if this is related to my wifi connection and I have no clue where to look for the cause.

suffers so bad the speeds are around 40-60KBps at an average sometimes even as low as 10-20KBps

Haw I would love to get my speed up to 10~20 KPS. I am currently down loading at 0.1~2.0.
this with a Fios DSL Connection

1 peer, 0 assigned Chunks, ?How do you tell how many seeds?

Test your Speed First

Sun Mar 01, 2009 1:36 am
I usually do the following after installing a new Ktorrent, to see what is its speed like, and as well, usually do it for my friends that have moved from windows.
I do a rigours configuration in details, etc, then I check the speed by down loading from Legitimate Sites, and usually it is a LINUX bitternt site, like Fedora, OpenSuse, Ubuntu etc, just for around 20 minutes, if I don't need the down load I remove it.
if the speed hits high, then all is well, otherwise, I come here and pester Mio Fratelo
George and the rest of the wonderful people!(I do mean that one, no malicious Irony)
The Sites like Buccaneers' Bay etc, are riddled with problem and at time the Big companies hire internet thugs to disrupt them, choke them etc, they may have large number of seeders but their speed may not be that high and some people there deliberately reduce their upload speed.

First of all: sorry for my realy bad english..

A snippet from my Router help file:

Some applications require multiple connections, such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, Internet telephony and others. These applications cannot work when Network Address Translation (NAT) is enabled. If you need to run applications that require multiple connections, specify the port normally associated with an application in the "Trigger Port" field, select the protocol type as TCP or UDP, then enter the public ports associated with the trigger port to open them for inbound traffic.
Note: The range of the Trigger Ports is from 1 to 65535.

Just forwarding the Ports (NAT) was not enough. Upload was allways at Limit (70Kb/sec) and Download between 10Kb/sec to 20Kb/sec.
my Router: Vodafone EasyBox A602. Many actual Routers based on the same Hardware.

After applying the Ports in section "special Application" too, the Download increased to > 400Kb/sec
