ktorrent stops other traffic

Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:41 pm
I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem and how I can fix it. Whenever I have ktorrent running I can't browse the web at all, however as soon as I turn it off I can connect to sites.

Any suggestions on what this could be?

Thanks,

Usually it is either :

- **** router
- **** ISP

The ISP can be defeated by turning on encryption in the settings and not allowing unencrypted connections.

The **** router might be solved by limiting the number of connections or disabling DHT.

Or uncapped upload/download speed rising to the limits of your connection?

I'm having a similar problem, but it's only local to the machine that has ktorrent running. All other machines on the network can properly access the internet. Even if I stop all torrents (leaving ktorrent open), that machine still seems to have problems. None of my ktorrent settings look odd to me, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm not running iptables or other firewall software locally (just my router)

My ktorrent settings are as follows:
Max DL: 5
Max Seed: 1
Max Conn/torrent: 100
Global Connection Limit: 600
Max UL Rate: 80
Max DL Rate: 0
Port: 6881
UDP Tracker Port: 4444
Number of Upload Slots: 10
Max Share Ratio: 1.50

custom hostname is set
DHT enabled on port 6881
using protocol encryption
allow unencryted connections is true

Memory Usage: medium
Type of service field of IP packets: 8 (what does this even do?)
Do not use the KDE proxy for http tracker connections: false (I don't have a proxy anyways)

Plugins:
UPNP enabled
Info Widget Enabled
Scheduler Enabled with max UL speed of 30 and max DL speed of 0

So only one machine has these problems. If you wait for a couple of minutes after you stop all torrents, are you able to access the internet again ?

Also try disabling DHT.

Yeah, waiting about 1 minute I can get to the internet again. Disabling DHT didn't appear to have any effect. I also noticed that I don't have QoS compiled into my kernel. Could this be the issue?

Is there any other Info I can provide to help resolve this issue?

What router are you using ?

I know of a problem with a router which interprets the large amount of connection setups after a successfull announce, as a portscan and promptly decides to drop these packets.

Any further TCP connection setup attempts by the same PC will then also be blocked, because it thinks it is part of the portscan, which prevents your browser from setting up new connections.

After a while all connection attempts will timeout and KT won't have any peers left to connect to and the firewall on the router then thinks the portscan is over and you can connect again to the outside world from that PC.

I'm using the Netgear WGR614 v6 router.

That's not the one I have seen this problem on. However you could try disabling the firewall on the router, and see if that helps the situation.

Me too

I have the same problem.
When started KTorrent don't let me do anything with the web.
I limited upload rate to 15 kb/s (of 30).
It seems that it stops the DNS queries.
I'm on a netgear RP614 (first version) adsl router with port forward enabled.

I limited also max connection per torrent to 60 and max connections to 400 (it were respectively 120 and 800).

i solved this problem with traffic shaping. i gave the ktorrent ports a low priority and my surfing, ssh, etc ports a high priority. it works really well, i get better speeds with both now.

But you can do that only with a router or you did it at kernel level?
