Hight CPU usage with KTorrent

Tue Apr 03, 2007 9:01 am
Hey there,

since I emerged KTorrent 2.1.2 on my Gentoo I'm having trouble with the performance of KTorrent.

It starts quite normal, but after a short periode of time it's using 50%+ of my CPU, which is very unusual, because I din't have any problems in this matter before.

I did switch to the SVN version of KTorrent today, just to check if there's any improvement, but there is none. Same problem occures again.

Any idea what the problem might be?

In the SVN version under advanced settings there is a slider, move it to slow CPU and see if that helps the situation.

Thanks George, I will try that as soon as I'm back home again (which is in about a week). Meanwhile I did improve my situation by reducing the priority of KTorrent on my system (nice 10). As I said, it did improve my situation, but it's still isn't perfect.

Hello,
I have the same problem since my upgrade from version 2.03 to version 2.14. Since then the CPU usage is so high that it is almost impossible to let ktorrent run in the background.
When I look at the processes running I see that ktorrent has three of them running, although I started it only once. Please look at the following picuture:

Here some information about my system:
Host/Kernel/OS "siduxbox" running Linux 2.6.21.1-slh-up-7 i686 [ sidux 2007-01 - Χάος (200702210759) ]
CPU Info AMD Athlon 256 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 996.022 MHz ]
Videocard ATI Radeon R200 QM [Radeon 9100] X.Org 1.3.0 [ 1280x1024 @60hz ]
Network cards Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+, at port: cc00
Processes 102 | Uptime 49min | Memory 216.3/503.8MB | HDD Maxtor 34098H4 B,SAMSUNG SV8004H Size 121GB (37%used) | Client Shell | Infobash v2.65

Hey,

I have the same problem but i also updated my KDE to 3.5.7 so that might have something to do with it i didn't seem to have any problems before that. I'll post some stats about the usage later....

[edit]
OK after some problems with ktorrent using up 100% memory and having to switch to terminal to find out Ktorrent did get killed because of that i decided to run some hardware diagnoses, and discovered that i had some issues on my harddrive i fixed the errors and everything seems back to the way it was. Ktorrent is now using between 5% and 12% of cpu memory is down to 50MB.....

My problems where there for primarily caused by the hard drive errors......

It just looked like Ktorrent was the culprit.

I check ktorrent on a different computer of mine and there it works like expected using about 8% of the CPU time. Here the specs of the other computer:
Host/Kernel/OS "SiduxBox" running Linux 2.6.21.1-slh-up-7 i686 [ Debian lenny/sid ]
CPU Info AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512 KB cache flags( sse sse2 nx lm pni ) clocked at [ 1000.000 MHz ]
Videocard nVidia NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] X.Org 1.3.0 [ 1152x864 @100hz ]
Network cards nVidia CK8S Ethernet Controller, at port: fc00
Processes 112 | Uptime 17min | Memory 168.2/503.8MB | HDD ATA SAMSUNG HD080HJ Size 80GB (20%used) | GLX Renderer GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2/3DNOW! | GLX Version 1.4 (1.5.8 NVIDIA 96.31) | Client Shell | Infobash v2.65

Therefore I will also investigate in a possible hardware problem on the other machine.

Best Regards,
Sordon
