Port Forwarding?

Mon Apr 09, 2007 4:20 am
My desktop's ethernet is wired to a laptop which is wirelessly connected to the router. My laptop gets its ip from the router which is by default 192.168.1.100. I am currently setting the nic on my laptop to 192.168.0.1. My destop is automatically set to 192.168.0.44. This was the only way I could get my desktop to connect to the internet. What I am asking is, how do I forward the ports in the router to my desktop when it's address is 192.168.0.44 when the routers port forwarding scheme is 192.168.1.x

Thanks

I want to be sure I understand you here, are you using software such as Windows "Internet Connection Sharing" to give your desktop access to the Internet through your laptop? If so then you may have a problem, ICS is notoriously difficult to configure for such things. There might be third party apps that make it easier. If you are doing something different or hooked up in a different manner we need to know what software/hardware is involved.

If you are doing what I suspect then you would be better off connecting the desktop directly to the router somehow.

You are correct, I am using internet connection sharing on my laptop with xp. The internet connection that I am using is my neighbors. They didn't bother to change any of the default settings on the router so I have control of it. They don't seem to mind. I didn't bother getting a wireless connection for my desktop becasue up to this point everything I have done using the internet connection from my laptop has worked just fine. I will try and get an access point for the desktop and see if that fixes my problem. It may lead to me building a cantenna. The wife will enjoy me messing with that.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try.
