Can't download anything with ktorrent 2.1/2.2

I'm using Suse 9.3. I have been using ktorrent 1.2 for quite many months and it worked mostly ok (I never had any problems downloading anything). I don't remember now exactly why, but I upgraded to ktorrent 2.1 because of some minor problems in 1.2. 2.1 seemed to work ok, so I completely uninstalled 1.2 from my system.

However, it has resulted now that I can't download anything with ktorrent 2.1. It reports many seeders and leechers for each torrent, but it just won't download a single byte. I have tried many torrents from many different, completely unrelated trackers, and it won't download a single byte from anywhere, even though it is seeing many seeders and leechers. If I open the torrent in BitTornado, it downloads the file just ok. (But I would like to use ktorrent because BitTornado is a bit too simplistic for my taste.)

I noticed that ktorrent 2.2 has been published, so I installed it. It makes no difference: Still not a single byte is downloaded. It just stays at 0 bytes downloaded. It has been like this for many days.

I even tried to explicitly open the ports used by ktorrent in the Suse firewall (even though this shouldn't be necessary because, as I said, ktorrent 1.2 and BitTornado worked just ok, with no need to tune the firewall), to no avail.

So in summary:

- ktorrent is seeing many seeders for each torrent, yet it's not downloading a single byte. This has been going on for many days.
- This happens with all torrents from all sites.
- ktorrent 1.2 worked ok. BitTornado works ok for the same torrents.
- Even explicitly opening the ports used by ktorrent 2.2 in Suse firewall makes no difference.

I don't understand what's going on.

Note: I tried downloading and compiling ktorrent 1.2, and it didn't have any problems downloading the files. 2.2 still won't download a single byte.

Check the logs in ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/, maybe you'll notice something peculiar.

The end of the log file is full of lines like these:

Fri Jul 6 18:39:21 2007: Authentication to <an ip address> : failure
Fri Jul 6 18:39:21 2007: Timeout occurred
Fri Jul 6 18:43:20 2007: Authentication to <an ip address> : ok
Fri Jul 6 18:43:20 2007: Connection closed

Actually I'm testing now with ktorrent 1.2 and it's writing tons of similar lines too (ie. "authentication to <ip>:failure", "timeout occurred", "connection closed", etc), but additionally it's writing tons of "Chunk <number> downloaded". So it seems that those closed connections, timeouts and failures are normal because they don't seem to stop ktorrent 1.2 from downloading the files.

For all intents and purposes ktorrent 2.2 is behaving, as far as I can see, completely identically to ktorrent 1.2 (it's seeing peers and leechers, it's writing the same (seemingly normal?) messages to the log file, etc), except that it's just not downloading a single byte, while 1.2 downloads normally.

I don't understand what's going on. Can anyone help?

I'm clueless. Perhaps George will be able to assist you.

-edit-

What if you delete ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent and ~/.kde/share/config/ktorrentrc and start 2.2 anew?

I would like to help diagnose and perhaps fix the problem (or at least help creating a FAQ entry if it's not a problem with the ktorrent code per se) because I would really like to use the latest version of ktorrent. However, I can't do it without help. I have no idea where to even begin.

This is certainly strange. What do you see in the peers tab ? There is a column named requests, what do you see in there ?

What's the peers tab?

For some reason, when I tried ktorrent 2.2 now, it started to actually download something. However, it behaves very erratically. It will suddenly just stop downloading for tens of seconds (even though it still says "Downloading" instead of "Stalled"), it reports impossible download speeds (such as 1400 KB/s even though a resource watcher says it's downloading only at about 80 KB/s (my connection can download at most at something like 100 KB/s)) and the number of seeders and leechers will go up and down erratically.

It seems that now it stopped, once again, downloading completely. It still says "Downloading" (not "Stalled") and is reporting a download speed of 70 KB/s, but it's not downloading anything. It has now been like this for many minutes.

It prints some messages to stdout while it's running:

kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype KTorrent/Plugin not found
kdevelop (core): [virtual void DDockWindow::addWidget(const QString&, QWidget*, bool)]
kdevelop (core): caption change
Qt: Warning: QInputContext: cannot create input context for non-toplevel widgets

The peers tab, is a tab labeled peers on the bottom. If you don't see it you either need to load the infowidget plugin and/or check if the tab is enabled in the infowidget settings (Show list of peers option)

I took a snapshot of the application:

http://warp.povusers.org/snaps/ktorrent-2.2.png

ktorrent 1.2 has no problems downloading that file.

I've downloaded the file in 2 minutes (nearly max. speed.) with KTorrent 2.2 It might be the problem with your firewall setup and/or KTorrent settings.
