Upload too fast ---

Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:01 am
Hello all,

I'm concerned that my upload may be too fast, and that I'll overload the Internet... :D Ok, that's the problem I want. The problem I have is my DL bites.

Seriously, according to KT's "Connection stats" my download speed averages 16k while upload is ~45k. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to contribute, but an upload speed three times higher than the download seems quite odd for a DSL link that's tested out around 5.5 megabits...

These numbers are quite typical, but since I haven't used BT in a few years I'm not clear on whether they are reasonable. Disabling DHT helped, but with only 2(47) seeders and 62(1043) leechers I can't see the DSL modem's capacity being the problem any more.

I'm running ktorrent-2.2.1-3.1.x86_64.rpm on openSuSE 10.2 . This version supports DHT, so I probably got it from here.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Greg

There are many "possibilities" that can explaine Your problem.

1. I do not know how Ktorrent calculates the avg speed, but if the speed is #MB/time connected then You have it... As more You are connected without any leachers, You avg speed goes down... How big are speeds when You seed/leach at the the best?
2. Always have DHT off. Most of trackers can BAN Your IP if it's on.
3. Do You have open TCP incomming port? Try to set it > 50k and make sure You NAT it trough Your FW and/or router.
4. test Your connection speed. Many ISP's are ripping of their customers. When You test the speed, make sure that You test speeds to different continents. I.e You are in the USA. Beside testing USA servers, test also Europe and Asia...
5. Then You have slow seeders/leachers on that torrent. try one on registered trackers (with ratio system)

Thanks for the fast reply.

KT has a monitoring plugin that'll give you instantaneous and average speeds over time, so that's where I'm getting my info. Stopping & starting the torrent show up quickly, but impacts the averages as you'd expect.

That's not good. Hmm, on the context menu for this torrent I disabled both DHT and Peer Exchange. When I did so, my seeder input cratered to 0 and my leachers are down 60%. DHT has always been disabled in KT config.

Actually, at one point I tested with my current box as the DMZ host. (I can see the attacks, so I know it's exposed ;) ) I just opened it up again, and I've increased my UL to 60K/s, but the DL is still ~16k/s. Hurm.

I'm using NPAD ( http://kirana.psc.edu/NPAD/ ) as pretty definitive - should I be using something else? (NPAD says the link tops out around the advertised 6Mbps.)

I thought that too, so I tried these tests with all torrents started, figuring that should saturate my downlink, but the downlink still stays below the uplink.

Hurm, the torrent only has one tracker: inferno.demonoid.com:3400/announce . Looks like it's registrations are closed... Does that affect DL speed?

Peer Exchage is OK to have... But have DHT off.
I run my speed tests on http://www.speedtest.net/ Try different servers...

The tracker You have specified is slow (relaly slow) most, because the seeders and leaches have their UL restcted...

Try to register with some other tracker that have ratio system in place (forces You to give as much MB as You download) There You can check Your speeds. Try some local trackers... I can insure You that Your speed will reach maximum :-)

Dont forget to restrikt Your UL spped to 80-90% of Your maximum. Thats giving You better DL speed...
I'm using at most swedish trackers... The general ones are usualy slow (thepiratebay(except top 100), mininova, torrentspy,....)

Peace

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the seed to peer ratio. When you only have a few seeds but thousands of leechers, it takes a while for you to get your data.

Have you tried other torrents that have more seeds than peers?
