Yeah.

Installed SuSE 10.2.... tried to compile/install KTorrent latest version.... OF COURSE I couldn't.... kinda getting used to this idea with linux. Hoping to get AWAY from the comfort/convenience of windoze... but this kind of situation is just what has always irritated (stronger expletive deleted) me about any flavor of linux...

I've installed the 5th distro now, and guess what? Still can't get KTorrent to compile... why? Error msg: Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3 and < 4.0) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation!

Searched forums here, on trolltech site, on KDE site, on Google - lots of errors like this, none resolved issues I have. Interestingly enough, I'm not even ABLE to get the version of Qt required bt this app.... Trolltech has decided to discontinue/scrap versions earlier than 4.0.... lovely. great support.

Used Linux back in the 90's.... worked great when it worked... which was rare.... dumped it for micro(****) windoze because of the headaches. Decided to try again, and got same result... It's unfortunate.

Guess I have to go back to uTorrent which actually works without jumping backwards through flaming hoops.

Oh yeah, save your flameback posts about how stupid and computer illiterate I am.... I'll check back for useful info, but I'm not holding my breath.

Pathetic as it is, I think I'll return to windoze and stability.

How stupid and computer illiterate you are! pause not

Although distros are basically sets of the same software, only with their own tools, package managers and philosophy, it is apparent that some of them are more prone to silly and annoying ... annoyances. Some, even if they don't provide out-of-box great experiences, do provide good documentation and helpful communities, which basically help alleviate all your possible problems that might arise in the course of using the distro. One of those not-necessarily-newbie-friendly-but-certainly-user-friendly distro with evercomplimented helpful community is Arch. If you do want to give GNU\Linux another chance, I kindly recommend you to give Arch a spin (if you haven't done so yet). Be sure to browse the its wiki (e.g. Beginner's Guide) and you have great chances to enjoy GNU\Linux again (and there's much to enjoy if things work right, believe me).

As for you case: if you do have qt3 installed, you probably have to run "qt-config qt3" to make it look for qt3, not qt4. Anyway, there are opensuse packages available on the download page.

You have the same problem a friend of mine had ;)

You assume everything is difficult, and therefor decide to go the hard way about it.

Either use the ktorrent version in your distribution, or grab files from http://ktorrent.org/index.php?page=downloads for your distribution.

If you for any reason need to install the development version, you need qt yes, but you don't need to go "outside" your distribution to find that. Your distribution will have development packages for everything (in debian and derivates those are called stuff like qt-dev, notice the -dev part). You dont need to look at trolltech for it :)

It was very late when I posted and I hope I didn't offend too many people ;)

@lucke and neuron - thanks for the info, I wasn't really expecting any replies.

I read that somewhere that the kTorrent client that comes packaged with SuSE 10.2 is 2.0.3 and any later releases were crippled due to copyright issues. Therefore I couldn't use yast to "update" the client.

I also assumed that when you download an RPM and right-click it - select "Install package..." - that it would in fact install. That also failed, so I thought that perhaps the package was broken for whatever reason.

I still have no idea why it didn't install properly for me that way, but I did in fact get the latest version by using...

rpm -il <ktorrent package>

Anyhow, it's working - and I have to admit, 2.2.2 is SO much better than 2.0.3... I am actually getting the expected D/L speeds of 300+K/s instead of 20K/s...

Still.... I might give Arch a try....

Thanks again guys, sorry for the rant :)

Then install libqt3-headers, your issue is not because you don't have the right qt, it's because you don't have the dev qt libraries.

You mustn't have looked for so much. I had the same issue, plus some more, and found the solution whithin less than 1 hour.

However, azureus does its job very well as transmission, bittornado or freeloader.

Simply try them if you still can't compile ktorrent.

Sometimes it's much simpler to actually do what you are told, in this case check your install.

Open the Software Manager in YaST and search for Qt. Then you simply selsect to install qt3-devel and qt3-devel-tools just for good messure. The -devel package are wher the headers are installed, it's standard practice on Linux distributions. Something you have to get used to when installing from source, install the -devel packages.

First thing i do after installing kubuntu is installing kdesdk and build-essential. After that i don't know, maybe python2.4 and unsermake but that is all there is to it.

If you're running a debian-like system, you can run apt-get build-dep ktorrent to get what's needed to compile ktorrent. SuSE may have something similare

I can not speak for SUSE as I have not used it much but it sounds like you are not happy with the distro. I think of all the distros I have used Ubuntu is the best for me and has one of if not the best support communities. If you prefer KDE you could install Kubuntu.

Ktorent and Opensuse

Thu Sep 13, 2007 3:19 am
The unpleasant remarks made here are most regrettable, after all people come here for help not for disparaging or derogatory remarks.
I use OpenSuse10.2, with Ktorrent, I upgraded just by going to the Ktorrent web site and down loading the new version from the site, it is one the third line from top.
as well you can go to the YaST, click then software manager, and type ktorrent and click upgrade.
Only problem with Opensuse is that after down loading is finished it will not allow you to seed. So you may not get a favourable ratio, which is frowned upon by some Bittorrent sites and may exclude you.
If you are coming from Windows, go the bottom left corner of the screen(desktop) and right click on the green Lizard(Salamander, Camel ion) head and choose KDE menu, which more similar to Windows.
2.Fedora is pretty similar, and I used their RPM for up grade.
3.PClinuxOS has synaptic, it can up grade with ease, just search for Ktorrent and from the options click upgrade.

Seconding the above: You can always use a pleasant, windows-user friendly distro like PCLinuxOS.

I requested a package upgrade for KTorrent for the past three upgrades. The PCLOS team put them in our repositories, and so I install straight from there.

Just like a 'Windows Update.' No compiation, as it's all done by the development team. Thanks KTorrent team, and thanks PCLOS.

SuSE 10.2 is an excellent distribution.

SuSE has two great user supported help forums, either of which would be more likely to provide better SuSE specific help than you could expect to find here.

http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/
http://suseforums.net/

SuSE is a rpm package oriented distribution, as you know. I would suggest that you avoid compiling programs from source and instead depend on the distribution and third party packages for your program needs. I suspect that you will find few that are missing from some source. Guru and Packman, particularly, fill the needs for copyright free package versions. The forums above list installation source urls.

While it may indeed be possible that certain features of ktorrent are disabled in the release version (I really don't know), Guru is not inhibited by those copyright issues. Add http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser ... 10.2/RPMS/ as a source to YAST or other package manager and download the ktorrent-2.2.1.guru.suse102 or later version. It allows seeding after the download is finished.
