Slow upload speed during download

Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:37 am
Hello!
I'm pretty new to KTorrent (I've been using Azureus mostly with great success, but I'm looking for alternatives because it's system resource hungry) so I'm not sure if all my settings are correct. I've tried several torrent with good seeds/leechers ratio, and during torrent download I noticed there is hardly any upload activity going on. When the download is finished, however, upload seems to work OK. I use Firestarter software firewall (and don't have any router), but didn't have any problems with it in Azureus and I assume I don't have them in KTorrent because DL speed is quite good. My KTorrent settings are:
- max conn. per torrent: 300
- global conn. limit: 800
- max ul rate: 22
- max dl rate: 0
- port: 50002 (I use these 50xxx ports in Azureus and they work fine)
- udp port: 50001
- no. of ul slots: 5
- dht enabled (port 50002)
- protocol encryption enabled (allow unencrypted conn.)
- performance: default settings

Please advise!

Latest stable (2.2.2).

Later I tried a couple of other torrents and upload was better. Does KTorrent handle downloads/uploads differently than Azureus? I'm pleasantly surprised with KTorrent download speeds.

Hi, I'm using KT 3.5.8. I noticed that the upload management seems not up to par. I would like to see a more constant upload rate like some other clients have, It really reduces seeding time.
Please let me know if there are any tweaks or patches,
thanks
Datz

PS, I know my bandwidth capabilities well, so it not a case of me thinking I have more than I really do, it just seems that KT dosn't make use of my upload bandwidth well...However DL is great.

Ok, I think I found found a way to make the upload a bit more constant. I increased the number of upload slots to 4 from 2. I have my upload set to 50KB/s when just seeding which is my max, But before this change, it would drop considerably sometimes to 5-10KB/s. When using qtorrent, I noticed that it keeps the UL rate at a pretty solid number which made the best use of my seeding time(need to play FPS games sometimes and can't seed during them.

So my question now is, are the number of UL slots set according to indicated connection speed, or is it just 2 by default? if the number is just 2 by default, I think that it should be moved to 4, or if it is set according to connection speed, then the defaults should be tweaked to make the most of the bandwidth.
thanks for any consideration

Interesting you get a more stable upload with more upload slots. I don' t even see why we have a 2 upload slots in the tit for tat world while most of us have adsl/cable etc.
Maybe the time has come for a simple "first start configuration dialog" ala deluge-torrent?
