There have been several news articles on Comcast using Sandvine to prevent seeding on P2P. Currently their software will allow you to download but not seed after the download is finished. The software works at different times, and no one has figured out yet what triggers the software to activate the rst attacks. Non Comcast users are also affected by this because the rst is sent to both ends.
For the past several days I have been seeding kubuntu-7.04-dvd-i386.iso, my current share ratio is 4.91. It appears that if I add the /etc/hosts 127.0.1.1 torrent.ubuntu.com ktorrent can not contact the tracker at all. I have encryption set to on and do not have the "allow unencrypted connections" checked so the only connections I get are encrypted and not through the tracker. I have DHT/PEX enabled. This method has also worked with a few other public torrents, but some public torrents do not allow DHT/PEX. You also need a file with a lot of peers to increase your chances of finding encrypted connections via DHT/PEX. It is best to put the public tracker in the hosts file before you start to download the torrent. I have experimented allowing ktorrent to contact the tracker, and it seems that after a few times, especially in a short period of time, the peers start dropping rather quickly until there is none. It could all be "coincidence" or it could be the software they are using to prevent seeding uses the tracker announcements as the trigger. If you have many seeds, there are many tracker announcements going out which could be the trigger to activate the Sandvine software that starts sending out the rst messages to both your system and the peer you are connected to at the time. The answer may be in the tracker announcements and limiting or hiding them, another feature for ktorrent? ability to regulate torrent announcements? Comcast may be the main ones doing it now but as time goes on more and more isp's will see it as a way to sell more bandwidth then they have to actually provide. on edit: I am seeding at less than 100% of my upload capacity , usually around 80%. I found that if I sent ktorrent to unlimited upload speed the Comcast software will boost it to about 300KBS for a short period and then the connections start dropping - perhaps another trigger is using the Comcast upload boost too often or it could all be "coincidence" |
