Hello!
A few weeks ago I attempted to upgrade Kubuntu from 7.04 to the new 7.10. Basically, it died and I can't log in properly. Rather than attempt to fix it, I decided it would be much cleaner to order the new DVD (I don't have a torrent client on my windows partition, and this way may be quicker) and start from scratch. I won't lose much because all of my important files and settings were kept on a separate partition. Anyway, the one thing I don't know how to do is to transfer my old KTorrent data in order to keep using it as I was, as if nothing happened. To clarify, I want to install the new OS, install KTorrent, and then move old settings to their respective folders so when I open it for the first time it will resume my current downloads at the point they were before I tried the OS upgrade. I just need to know what folders and files to save and replace - my actual torrents are already on my shared fat32 partition. I have read in another discussion that I may need to get some things from $HOME/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/ , but are there any files I should not transfer from here? - such as OS specific settings or something. Are there additional settings stored elsewhere I need to look for? Thank you for any help you can give me. I hope this upgrade goes smoothly. *crosses fingers* EDIT: If it helps, I believe I may have upgraded to KTorrent 2.2.1 before the OS upgrade attempt.

There shouldn't be anything in there you need to remove. If you want to keep all your settings get this file $home/.kde/share/config/ktorrentrc And then obviously you need your actual torrent data in the correct place where you had it saved previously. Good Luck Jeremy |

After a reinstall of Kubuntu 7.10 I began my attempt at fixing ktorrent 2.2.1. Here is what I have done:
1. Replaced these files, while keeping a .old version of each: /Home/.ktorrent.lock /Home/.kde/share/config/ktorrentrc /Home/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/* 2. Make absolute certain that my share folder was exactly the same (case sensitive). It is at "/share/torents/*" and the files have not been touched at all since the program last ran. When I start ktorrent I get the list of downloads and uploads displaying correctly and my old settings are there. Success, I thought, but then I tried to start one of the downloads to make sure it worked. I got the following error: "Several data files of the torrent "TORRENT_NAME" are missing, do you want to recreate them, or do you want to not download them?" or "The file where the data is saved of the torrent "TORRENT_NAME" is missing, do you want to recreate it?" (where 'TORRENT_NAME' is the name of the torrent) I think which message comes up depends on whether the torrent is a single file or a folder with multiple files. I select 'cancel' as I don't want to destroy my old data files and start over. The only thing I did to alter any of these files is when I transferred the settings files and folders from my Home folder I changed the permissions (chmod 777 -R) in order to move them properly (it was over a week ago and I can't remember why I actually did that now). I didn't think this would have any effect on the running of the program, but it's the only change I have made at all. My login name is exactly the same, too. Does anyone have any idea what I should try to get this working? |

I seem to have fixed this issue.
I decided to take a look at the /Home/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/tor* folders to see if there was anything missing. I didn't know what I was looking for, so I manually restarted/recreated one of my torrents which were at 0% anyway. I found its tor* folder and noticed it had a link in the cache folder. This gave me an idea which I checked and was surprised that it worked. Here are the steps: 1. Open ktorrent 2. Right-click on a torrent and select "Open Directory -> Data Directory" 3. Right-click on the same torrent and select "Open Directory -> Temporary Directory" 4. Select all the files in the first (data) folder and move them to the second (temporary) folder. When prompted, choose to only create a link. 5. Close both folder windows. 6. Repeat for all torrents. I don't understand how this works exactly, but it looks as though the links in my cache folders had disappeared, or something. A few torrents had folders within folders and I had to manually open each and create more links, and some torrents didn't work the first time until I played around with them a bit. Hope this information comes in use for someone else one day. |
