ktorrent kills my internet connection

Heya

Whenever I start ktorrent my internetconnection seems to suffer massive overload

I am using ktorrent 2.2.4 on archlinux with kdemod (splitted and slightly patched kde)
The connection is totally stable right before launching ktorrent, then the speed in ktorrent soars up and after around 15 secs nothing can get online anymore, netstat blocates on some remote sites for a few seconds and ktorrent is down to like 1,5kbs both up and down

I am using DHT, 120 open connections per torrent, 800 max.
I have a 6656kbit down and 640kbit up dsl connection and get my ports through the router with upnp

It is a single torrent active (with ~80k peers), 30kbyte/s up max.

Disconnecting and reconnecting resurrects the connection until ktorrent seems up to full load again :-/

Does limiting the connection setups give you a better result?

It seems to delay the overload (I am not even sure if overload is the proper word for this)

When I reduce to 50 act. con. per torrent and 30kbyte/s upstream it takes like 1 minute

I'd be glad to supply logs about the network load, but I don't know what you'd prefer or where to get appropriate data

Under advanced settings, there is a property named maximum number of connection setups, decrease that to 10 for example, then try it again.

Reducing the max. connection setups helped, but my internet connection died completely shortly afterwards due to problems in the telephone network here :-/ So maybe the whole issue was down to this problem already
The current kde four live (great name =) ) download runs pretty fast, but don't has the amount of people on it tho...
If it happens again (on tuesday ;) ) I'll keep you informed, thanks for the help!

I dont know if I have the same problem, but ktorrent totally slows the whole connection. so if it even does not downloading anything but only uploading the other applications can hardly reach the net. reducing the connection number settings does not help. the connection does not die. quiting the ktorrent solves the problem.

In addition to reducing the number of connection setups and maximum number of connections, also try disabling DHT.

Dht is disabled. What are your settings for "DSCP for IP packets" and "Maximum number of connection setups" ?

If you are having connection problems, # of setups should be 5 or 10. No more than 10.

It helped. I had 50 by default.

George, let's limit default max connection setups to about 10. Most routers in DMZ mode cannot track more than 10 half-opens, and non-DMZ mode sometimes isn't much better.

what will deffo improve your connections speed and quality is to limit the upload rate to about 80% of your internet line upload speed

Depends on the quality of your line though, some lines can take almost the full upload speed while others can't.

I guess we could do that, I will think about it.

and as I see the minimum connection setups is set to 10 (when i choose 8 it returns 10 again). better to have 10 defaul and a chance to reduce it to 8.
