Many trackers are banning Ktorrent! Some lame private trackers such as these two, http://www.araditracker.com and http://www.blackcats-games.net require that specific Winblows torrent clients be used. Deluge has the ability to spoof clients such as utorrent. Firefox has the ability to spoof other browsers. Is Ktorrent limited or does this feature exist? If not, will it exist any time in the near future?

We've had this discussion before. the conclusions everyone reached was:
(1) It's an open source client. It's not all that hard to change its reported identity. (2) Doing so is wrong, wrong, WRONG, and will only serve to smear KTorrent's name. (3) It's a much better idea to contact the tracker admins to evaluate KTorrent for their network -- all of us here would be glad to answer any concerns they raise about our client. |

Small world. Good news though: I found out how KTorrent's source code can be modified, so that it will work with the Aradi tracker.

I found this thread via Google, and I though it could be worth applying for an account at this forum to contribute to this discussion.
I'm having a similar problem but with a small difference. The administrators of a tracker I use, have banned all older versions than the very latest of every known torrent client, including KTorrent. IMHO, that is a very bad approach, since many GNU/Linux distributions supply packages of many programs which are not always in phase with the current release. I have tried to explain that to them, but they just told me to upgrade to the latest version. That means, they are uncapable of understanding logic and reason. To install KTorrent 2.2.5 in my Kubuntu 7.10 system, I had to install nearly 100 dev packages and compile KTorrent from source, just to find out that the UI hangs after a while of using it. For my case, and for all other trackers that apply to this approach (I've heard about a few), it would be enough just to have an option to spoof the version number of the client. I mean, I still want to call my client KTorrent, but instead of 2.2.1 I want it to appear as 2.2.5. Could this be implemented as a plugin, or must it be changed in the core source? I believe it is the latter. If so, may I vote for this feature to be implemented in the official version of KTorrent? |

Ubuntu Backports. enable one repository (officially developed one, in fact) and get the latest version of KTorrent without installing any other packages. As the maintainer of Backports and semi-maintainer of KTorrent* in Ubuntu, I am completely unaware of any reported instances of KTorrent 2.2.5 freezing.
I still think it's very wrong for a torrent client to allow the user to change its ID. This should be taken up with the tracker admin. |
