I am trying to manually change the time between tracker updates from 30 minutes to something much shorter.
Does anyone know how this can be accomplished?

There is no feature to do this, as many trackers do not take this kindly. They may ban you or ktorrent altogether, because of the additional strain it can put on the server.

However this is an opensource program, so you could modify the source, but I would have no idea where to start.

AFAIK transmission has a much shorter interval, you might try that.
