Hello,
I have a 1500/384 DSL line from Covad. They provided me a Broadxent Briteport 8120 DSL Modem/Router. I had problems with kTorrent that tended to make me a leecher. Downloading seemed okay but when I went to seeding my web surfing and DNS would go away. After awhile I would get host not found on the tracker and I would have to stop kTorrent and restart it. I also found that the web browser would just time out. IRC and audio streams still seemed to work but I use ip addresses with those. I found a lot of suggestions to lower various parameters in kTorrent. I did that but found that even with upload limits of 10 or 15 kbps I was still having problems. I did some ping tests and noticed with kTorrent seeding I was getting 15 to 20 percent lost pings and increased ping times that varied wildly from 60 MS to 1500 MS. Changing the upload limit did little to help this. I had problems before with this Briteport 8120. I have a gigabit network and found if I connected it directly to a 1 gigabit switch then internet access would die 10 to 15 minutes later. If I reset, it would work for another 10 or 15 minutes and die again. I fixed that problem by puting a 10/100 router between the Briteport and the Gigabit switch. Then things worked or so I thought. I got a Zoom X5 DSL Modem/Router/Switch to replace the Briteport and there is a world of difference. I am now seeding with a uplink limit of 30KB, listening to a internet stream, web surfing, and on IRC without any problem. I found the ping times are longer with seeding on but it is more stable in the 300 MS range without the occasional > 1000 MS response and without dropped pings. It appears when the internet traffic gets too intense that the Briteport modem/router falls behind and delays or drops packets. I notice things are more responsive even without kTorrent running now. So I am sticking with the Zoom X5. 73 Eric |
