I am new to linux although a windows superuser. I can not all the fancy commandline tricks and need detailed help pls.

When I start ktorrent linux freezes, everything moves really really slow. Kind of reminds me of a windows box that have been kept running without reboot for several weeks.

I have for the time beeing 3 or 4 downloads going on at the same time. I started them last night and it all worked fine. Today when I got from work I could not run firefox or other appz and ktorrent had closed down or at least dissapperrad from the screen.

What can I do to fix this pls? Remember pls to give me step-by-step guiding here pls.

I use ktorrent 2.1-0ubuntu2.1. This info comes from the synaptic package handler. I am not sure how to see the version no. from within ktorrent as I can not start the program. Neither do I know how to start it in consolemode.

Your best bet is probably to try a later version (2.2.4), there is a good chance this is probably already fixed.

Noob as I am to Linux and ktorrent I will need to ask this before updating:

1: If I update to latest version will I loose any of the torrents I was currently downloading before I got problems? (huge files so I would hate to start from scratch)

2: Could anyone pls tell me if I could update via the package manager in Linuxmint, or if not give me a detailed step by step guide how to update.

1) No, you won't loose any torrents, this is currently only the case if you go to the next kde4 version but there is a work around for that too.

2) Just add the ubuntu backport to /etc/apt/sources.list
You can do this by
Code: Select all
$ kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list

And pasting this somewhere on the bottom:
Code: Select all
## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
## repository.
## N.B. software from this repository may not have been tested as
## extensively as that contained in the main release, although it includes
## newer versions of some applications which may provide useful features.
## Also, please note that software in backports WILL NOT receive any review
## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports main restricted universe multiverse

Then all is left is an sudo aptitude update and a sudo aptitude safe-upgrade to upgrade your ktorrent installation.

I might be slow here but even here I am getting problem. Where does the code go? I tried to copy the first line of
Code: Select all
$ kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
in your post but nothing happend. What I did was starting up the TERMINAL, pasting in the code. Here is what happend:

Code: Select all
oregano@oregano-laptop:~$ ^M$ kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list

$: command not found

oregano@oregano-laptop:~$

What am I doing wrong?

Maybe the best way for me for getting ktorrent working is to just leave it along and wait for the synaptic package-manager to be ready to let me get 2.2.4. Because I can't seem to make this work.

I wonder how long before I can have 2.2.4 via synaptic? As of now I cant have newer then 2.1 via synaptic.

Leave the dollar sign out of the paste and you're good to go. :)
You'll probably only get 2.2.4 via the backports.

What is backports?

I did as you said and left the $ sign:

Code: Select all
kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list

Here is what I got in the error msg:

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 169
Major opcode: 148
Minor opcode: 3
Resource id: 0x0
Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 169
Major opcode: 148
Minor opcode: 3
Resource id: 0x0
Failed to open device
sh:
kate: not found

But first I was prompted for a password, I gave me password clicked OK and nothing else then error.

Maybe I need to navigate manually to the folder or something like that?

Try kwrite instead of kate then.
Backports is a repository for packages which are transfered from the newest version of kubuntu to an older version.

Hmm tried that one too. It can not find that one here is the error msg:

Code: Select all
Command 'kwrite '/etc/apt/sources.list'' not found

Inside the terminal I get this msg after pressing Enter with kwrite rather then kate:

Code: Select all
oregano@oregano-laptop:~$

oregano@oregano-laptop:~$ kdesu kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list

I got yet another tip, this time from tech dude across the hall. According to him here is what I need to paste into the terminal:

Code: Select all
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

And I got the source list open. :D

Ok, I was able to get the source list open. I have pasted the code you put here on the bottom of the page and saved it. I am not sure what to do next.
You tell me:
Do an sudo aptitude update and a sudo aptitude safe-upgrade to upgrade your ktorrent installation.

The line I have no clue what to do. Pls talk to me in small words. Remember I am new to linux.

Ai, gnome not kde that is the reason....

Just invoke a
Code: Select all
sudo aptitude update

This is to update the changes you made in /etc/apt/sources.list

When this is done, invoke
Code: Select all
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

This is to upgrade ktorrent(and maybe more packages from the backports) in this case.
