KDE3 to KDE4

Tue Jan 15, 2008 10:58 am
I have installed KDE4 and Ktorrent 3 beta on Kubuntu Hardy and it seems to run fine. Thanks Ktorrent developers BTW :).

I just cant see my old kde 3 torrents I believe that is to do with the
.kde/share/apps/ktorrent folder.

I can't seem to get the old Ktorrent partials etc.. to appear in in the new Ktorrent version. I tried copying the folders over to no avail.

Please help
TIA

I just renamed the kde4 share-folder and symlinked ~/.kde4/share/apps/ktorrent to ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent. That's probably not a good idea, if you intend to use kt 3.0 exclusively.

Then you only have to adapt ~/.kde4/share/config/ktorrentrc to the old values (or configure it in the GUI) and you can continue where you stopped with ktorrent 2.2.

Thanks for that. I shall have to have a play to get that right.
I might be back :)

KDE4 will use ~/.kde4 to store all settings, if you want to migrate torrents you just need to copy the contents of ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent to ~/.kde4/share/apps/ktorrent.

Be careful with this though, the torX directories of KT3.O are not compatible with the 2.2 series, 3.0 will migrate old torrents, but 2.2 will have no clue where your files are if it tries to open a torX directory from 3.0.

I copied the files over as directed as it was easier than symlinking it -marginally.

It all seems to work. I guess I would have to just copy them back if I have to revert to kde 3?

Thanks both for your help again. I hope this helps someone else too. I am always genuinely surprised when people bother to answer :)

I experimented. It seems, that Torrents started in 2.2 can be downloaded with both 2.2. and 3.0, but KT 2.2 will not find the temp files, if it was started with KT 3.0. Is that correct?

I ask because I used the symlink solution and had no problems with my old torrents, even though I switched back and forth between old version (which is more stable when unattended) and new version (which is more cool :D )

As long as the symlinks in the torrent's cache directory are still there it should keep working. But if you start new ones with 3.0 and then open them with 2.2, things will probably go wrong.
