My ktorrent is downloading really slow. I mean slower then any of the complaints I have read online. Like 0.3 to 1.3 kb/s on average. I have read through your tips post. I have googled this and read through other fixes. Nothing works so far. My Mozilla loads fine. My Ubuntu updates download fast. I'm totally new to Linux to. Port forwarding through ktorrent doesn't work either. The buttons don't seem to do anything.
I have, -Ubuntu 7.10 (fresh install with all the available updates installed) -A Netgear 54 mbps router which I tried to port forward but I'm not sure if it worked. I set 50000 as the port. I read to do that somewhere. My ktorrent also is set to port 50000. -my network card is a d-link wireless 108mbps Thanks |

How long do you leave it on? And have you tried a cable?
Wireless sucks for torrenting, and it may also take extra long time before KTorrent can find a couple of "good" peers which are close and have better bandwidth (wireless sucks very much on many small "network-packets" to many different machines). |

I'd like to add my experience. Maybe this helps pinpointing why kTorrent is slow for some people. On the same machine using OpenSuSE 10.2 with the latest patches on a couple of given public torrents with kTorrent I get a download speed of about 1.1 kB/s and a "Time Left" of several weeks while using Deluge the speed goes up to 200 kB/s (about as much as my connection will do) and downloads of the same torrent are finished in 3 to 4 hours! The speed on kTorrent will not pick up, even after an hour. I have tried activating and deactivating DHT, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. The torrents in question have plenty of seeders (15-20) with 100% availability. The number of peers and seeders doesn't differ significantly between kTorrent and Deluge. Viewing in ntop, I seem to get a lot of traffic on all kinds of ports which are closed and I am not going to open everything.
I opened ports 6881, 6882 and UDP 4444, which (except 6882) are also the numbers set in the kTorrent preferences. I am using kTorrent 2.2.5, according to the About dialogue 'Using KDE 3.5.5 "release 45.8" openSUSE 10.2'. This is the latest Packman build for my system. I will not move to KDE4 any time soon. The comparison was against Deluge 0.5.8.4, also from Packman. EDIT: This is really embarrassing! I am sure I had checked this a thousand times before posting. I definitely didn't set it intentionally, but somehow the total download speed limit in the preferences was set to 1 kB/s. After I removed that limit the download worked fine at full speed. |
