"C Compiler can't create executables"

Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:16 am
Hey all.

I'm trying to install 2.2.5 on Linux Mint (latest in repos is 2.2.1)

I download and extract the tar, no prob. ON ./configure all appears to go well until the error, in the topic. What can I do to get past this?

TIA.

Check wheter you have build-essential installed, that will probably fix this.

Thanks, I got that, and got as far as configure tellingme it couldn't find X libraries. I used:

Code: Select all
./configure --x-libraries=/usr/lib

And although the libXext files are in /usr/lib I get:

Code: Select all
configure: error: We need a working libXext to proceed. Since configure
can't find it itself, we stop here assuming that make wouldn't find
them either.

Can anyone provide more help? Thanks, in advance.

Well, i generally build with kdesdk installed, which has all the needed packages already.

Yeah, I knew this would be an issue, as it's a Gnome desktop. But as a hybrid, it has a lot of KDE factors.

I'll keep at it.

Though it probably just is xlib-dev and maybe some other packages.
