[3.1.1] CPU usage

Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:15 am
Hello!
I was using ktorrent for kde3 a while - it was nice, lightweight.

Now I'm moving to kde4 and I noticed a difference in cpu usage from ktorrent process. With mostly same settings it takes from 30% up to 60% of cpu (more when downloading faster).

Is this normal? Will there be aditional optimizations - because this causes to throttle cpu frequency at max and it starts heating, making noise...

I've noticed the same thing.

While ktorrent never seemed very lightweight to me (but, then again, my usual number of torrents is around 400 and so far only utorrent managed to stay at low CPU/memory usage with so many torrents), after installing the kde4 version on kde3 the cpu usage basically doubled or trippled, from the usual 10-25% to 35-70%.

I have been looking at this, and have managed to speed the GUI up, which has reduced CPU usage quite a bit. Still need to tackle the download code.

So if you want the speed up, try the latest SVN code.

This still happens (70 - 90%) - something triggers it, because after restarting ktorrent cpu usage is normal.

Currently using:
Code: Select all
Revision: 837572
Node Kind: directory
Schedule: normal
Last Changed Author: guisson
Last Changed Rev: 837230

Update to latest, there was still a bug which resulted in high CPU usage in some cases. I fixed that yesterday.

Note: Check the network sleep interval parameter in the advanced settings, make sure it is not too small (50 or 100 should be OK)
