3.1.3 strange 90+% CPU problem with one particular torrent

Weird problem. When I download this (legal) torrent:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4442486 ... um.HQ.XviD
(btw, highly recommended movie!)

Ktorrent 3.1.3 is at 92+% CPU all the time, even if the torrent is stopped!

The moment I remove the torrent, Ktorrent settles down.

Help!

Hi,

Same problem here with torrent file:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3798437/

CPU usage blasting, as soon as torrent file is opened (in "select files you want to download" dialog).
CPU usage drops back to normal as soon as torrent is entirely removed.

I have
Ktorrent 3.0.1 using KDE 4.0.3
Ubuntu 8.04

Glad that I have nailed this CPU problem down to one file. [edit: this is /not/ related to one file. See below] This has been a recurrent problem over the last 2 years, which I had never identified.

Cheers,

Olivier.

I will check them out properly when I get home, just opening them doesn't seem to cause the problem with the SVN version.

My mistake

My mistake - correcting information above.

It appears that *every* new torrent file downloaded from the Pirate Bay causes the CPU surge. Thi s is not related to one particular file.

Old torrent files that I have downloaded in the past from the Pirate Bay are ok. Newly downloaded torrents (just any file I can pick) cause CPU surge.

On the other hand, downloading a torrent from Isohunt (ex: http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/31796280/ ), even if the tracker in the torrent is vip.tracker.piratebay.org:80 , works perfectly fine.

I suspect a corruption of some sort in the torrents downloaed from the TPB site.

And, some short additional info:
  • the torrents that cause CPU surge work fine in the Transmission client (default on Ubuntu)
  • downloading the torrents by other means than my usual browser (for example, using wget or Konqueror) does not change anything - so the files have not been corrupted during download.

Would the same torrent downloaded from tpb and isohunt cause a difference in behaviour?

Good question; but this is hard to find out. From what I could find (—1—/—2— ; —3—/—4—), the torrents are very different even though the target files are (likely) identical. Try a diff of the torrents linked here, for example.

I can reproduce the problem with 3.1.3, so it shouldn't take long to fix.

It is fixed now, it was an infinite loop of failed DNS lookups in the UDP tracker code.

Fix will be part of 3.1.4 which is going to be out this weekend.
