I just finished building 3.1.4 on Kubuntu Intrepid. It runs smoothly, the only thing that i'm missing is the search bar of the searchplugin. The search-plugin is marked in the plugin list. Do I need to activate it somewhere else too?

No, there should be a search bar to the top right of your screen.
