What are people doing about KDE4 dependency?

Gentoo doesn't consider KDE4 to be a replacement for KDE3 yet, so it is masked. Having tried it myself on another computer for a while, I agree with them anyway, too many minor quirks with how things worked (worst example was, you delete a file from the desktop and it deletes the icon but not the file.) So I don't really want to update to KDE4 until it is actually ready.

So... now that KTorrent is dropping support for the KDE3 version, what are people doing about the dependency on KDE4? Is it considered safe to install kdelibs-4, and run KTorrent on KDE3 still? Because I have this fear KDE4's stuff will migrate my .kde directory, and then break all the KDE3 apps I still use...

KDE4 uses .kde4, AFAIK, so there should be no problem running KTorrent3 on KDE3.

Well, that depends on your distro whether kde is going to be replaced afaik. You should mess with the dependencies to figure out where it leaves you.

At the current point in time, kdelibs version 4 itself is considered unstable. :-/

I guess I'll just have to hold out on KTorrent 2 for now, and update to 3 when they (Gentoo) consider it stable. The alternative is to unmask it manually, but I'm scared of the dependency flood that usually happens.

Yeah, you could easily keep using the stable 2.2.8. There is nothing against this.

At the moment there are no known security issues in 2.2.8, so you can keep using it without problems.

There will be, as soon as the new RSS plugin is out in 3.2. I had raised a bunch of bugs about the plugin in 2.x which were closed wontfix, because it's being superseded by the one in 3.x which won't be made available for 2.x. :-(
