Sudden surge, then dropback.

Thu Dec 04, 2008 7:31 pm
Hello,

When I have a couple of torrents downloading, with enough seeds and I limit them at, say 45 kb/s, and then set ktorrent to downloading with no limit again, I will see a sudden surge, with a couple of torrents having a download speed of up to 300kb/s, followed by a dropdown in speed. How can this be explained?

Thank You,

Download speed capping is done by reading at a fixed rate from the kernel, the kernel however will keep on receiving packets as soon as there is room in it's internal buffers, so this should be at the same rate ktorrent is reading from the buffer.

The moment you lift the cap, those buffers are emptied very quickly and you get this surge in download speed, as soon as the surge is over the download speed returns to the actual download speed. So this is not really a surge in download speed, it is just the buffers being emptied.
