Yeah...I don't like the select files popup either. I'm running ubuntu with gnome. So, in addition to anything that works in other message posts here, maybe if you also edit the contents of the ktorrent.desktop file under /usr/share/applications/kde4 directory (I found it there in my ubuntu 9.04 desktop installation) and change the orginal line with Exec at the beginning from

to

Exec=ktorrent --silent %i -caption "%c" %u

***Note: but this might completely hide ktorrent on a regular first run when you click the icon from a desktop or from the Applications menu ... hmm not so sure ... just an idea
