I really don't want to bother with tarballs and other nonsense. I want Synaptic to download 3.2 from a repository.

So. How to do? Anyone?

All depends on your distribution, for ubuntu you can request a backport on launchpad for intrepid.

Well, to get newer packages in your xubuntu 8.10 than the one it was released with, you need to ask for a so called backport of a software package.
Now, this can be done at launchpad here.

If you need more info just tell so.

I was just about to ask this question. Since I too am no good with .tarz. I like using .deb's or Synaptics.

From what I see the link you provided stoeptegel doesn't explain how to get the newest release(maybe I'm being blind though).

So, Im using Ubuntu 8.10. Can you please type exactly what to do to have Synaptics get 3.2 Final?

Thank you.

Well, this is easy, just add this too your /etc/apt/sources.list
Code: Select all
deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-backports main restricted universe multiverse

And then do an
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get upgrade

Yeah, I remember doing something like that for another client, or app or something. But I couldn't remember how.

Thank you stoeptegel. I'll give it a try.

Umm... That crashed my synaptic downloader.... Made the change like you said, but when it tried to update sources it says there is an error in the list, but it wont let me edit the list. It says I do not have authority.

When I added it, I clicked on the list and the program opened... but it didnt add to the actual list of programs. When I clicked on edit the file instead, I seethe changes but I can not save the file after I delete the changes.

How do I get authority, and why do I not have authority to edit the list file?

Well, you can have authority by using
sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list
(use "i" for starting to edit the file, and use "escape :wq" to save the file)

I dunno why synaptic does not give you any access, because i do not use that program, i only use the command line.

Did you resolve this? I had already added my local backport but added the Dutch one suggested here - still no joy. It doesn't seem that this version is there! I'm running Xubuntu 8.10. Has anyone got 3.2 to work on Xubuntu? I've tried compiling it but am such a newbie - I failed miserably!
Thanks in advance,
Paul

shouldn't that be

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

instead of
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get upgrade

AppArmor is the most useless application for a home user...

Nah, this didn't work for me. I'm getting this error. I really only like upgrading through synaptics since I suck at tarz. I wish .deb's would be created for the new releases.

Code: Select all
Reading package lists... Done
W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net intrepid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 976B5901365C5CA1
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

And after I run apt-get update as it suggest, I get this error:

Code: Select all
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

I googled that error, and the response I found was to run sudo apt-get update. Which then brings me back to the first error that I got.

Yeah, you first need to import an gpg key for this. But the easiest thing you could do currently is to upgrade ubuntu to 9.04 so that you have the latest KTorrent.
