Torrent life cycle and share ratio of a user

Hi All,

This is my first post, so I apologize for everything stupid I might say.
I have noticed that certain kind of torrents behave in a different way from what is commonly considered the rule: you generally download fast and the more bandwidth in upload you give, the more bandwidth in download you receive.
I'm guessing what are the conditions in which this statement turns to be false and what could be the reason, apart from technical problems. Just an hypothesis: let's say that during exponential growth of the number of peers connected, everybody would upload more than download, because the newcomers with no data to share are much more than those with data. When this exponential phase is gone, the share ratio will return to 1 or less.
Is there any kind of study/theory/mathematical model in regards of P2P that can explain how a peer network behaves? Is it considered an issue? Is there any solution for it? Other reasons that can be explored are behaviors of the peers and of the clients.
