KTorrent freezes entire desktop for almost a minute

Hi,

I've been encountering a strange issue over here with KTorrent 3.3dev on KDE4.3.1 (openSUSE 11.1). KTorrent will freeze the entire desktop for at least a minute while retrieving the IP blocklist. This only happens on startup of KTorrent and when it needs to update the list. I've set this to one day interval so if I start up KTorrent after a day, it freezes desktop while retrieving the list. After it has gotten the list it releases the desktop and all is fine and if I close it and then start it up again after a few seconds or a minute, no such freezing happens. Disabling the IP blocklist option and then starting KTorrent after a few days also does not result in such freezing. So I suspect there's something going on when IP blocklist is enabled and when it needs to update it after a set period of time. If KTorrent is running and the set period of time is reached so it needs to download said list again, no freezing happens either. Only on startup does it happen when it needs to download and update the list

Can't reproduce this here, this happens in the background, so shouldn't block anything. Even if it runs in the foreground it shouldn't block the desktop.

What happens if you start the update manually ?

Hi George

Manually updating works OK and behaves just as when KTorrent is running, reaches the update interval and then automatically downloads and updates the list.

btw, if it matters, the list is bz2 compressed (from bluetack)

Maybe it's not due to the downloading of the list but when KTorrent converts it? As I said, this only happens when I start KTorrent *and* it needs to update the list. If it doesn't need to do that, no freezing occurs. I haven't messed around with any compile options or so and follow the "standard" way of compiling it, as shown on wiki

I encountered the same problem: but the freeze starts after about 20 minutes (cpu temperature increases and desktop manager KDE4.3.3 is not responsive at all) and continues till I close Ktorrent3.3-rc1: then cpu temp decreases ( 8°C: from 57° to 41°) and kde becomes again fluid and responsive...

Well, I've since updated to 4.0dev from SVN and my KDE4 to 4.3.3 but the problem is still here. I just ran ktorrent from console and this is what I got (not much wiser from it, to be honest)

Code: Select all
neutrino@neutrino:~> ktorrent
Critical: <unknown program name>(4005)/: Communication problem with  "ktorrent" , it probably crashed.
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "
