I'm having problems with slow uploads - usually about 20-100 KiB/s, very rarely reaching 600-800 KiB/s for a while, and dropping again. I know my upload speed could be much faster, because with uTorrent I've seen consistent upload speeds of over 1 MiB/s. What could be causing this?

KTorrent version is 3.3
Port numbers: 62000 and 4444 (tried with default numbers with same results)

Both ports are forwarded. Using tcpdump, I see traffic over TCP and UDP over the first port number. But I do not see any traffic to port 4444.

Yes, where is something wrong. For example, maximum connections per torrent is 60, there are 59 seeder connections and only 1 leecher connection. So upload speed is really slow.
