encryptfs issue

Thu Jun 24, 2010 6:11 pm
Hello.

I'm having some problems with an encrypted home directory and ktorrent.
System: Ubuntu 10.04 x86 ext4

I tried both the stock Ubuntu deb (3.3.4+dfsg.1-1ubuntu2) and then the latest release built from source (4.0.1)

With default options KT stays indefinitely at "allocating disk space" with a ~4Gb file. Trying to quit KT leaves a zombie process consuming 50% CPU (1 core), at least that's what krunner says. Only rebooting helps.

Deactivating the "reserve disk space..." option somehow improves things, as in torrent starts downloading. However, speeds are low (half of what should be), HDD led never stops blinking and overall system response is affected. Quiting KT works this time.

Downloading to a non-encrypted ext4 dir cures everything.

Additional reference: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs/+bug/482509

I did some search about the subject in the forum but nothing showed that the devs are aware of this problem.

Isn't this a bit logical, encrypting and decrypting a lot of data takes time. It seems to me that downloading large amounts of data to an encrypted volume is bound to be slow.

It isn't logical for me. This is on the fly encryption. It makes things a bit slower but it should never end to blocking applications and such.
For example I just switched to truecrypt (same thing for the user - different implementation) and everything works smoothly.

There must be something terribly wrong in either encryptfs or the way torrent clients write and read data on disk.

I'll post further complaints in the encryptfs bug system.

Thank you.
