Hello I've been using Ktorrent for quite a while and been having speed issues for a couple of months. I recall ktorrent having quite a good speed before kde4 came around, since then it ups and downs. Now the average is 70 to 100KB/s compared to 200 to 300 KB/s before.
So I spent some time trying to figure it out. I'm accessing internet through wifi, 2 routers bridging the connection to the cable modem. The past year or so the connection provided by the ISP has actually been improved with upload speed doubling to 256Kbps (32KB/s) so I would expect things to run smoother.
Upload speed set at 7KB/s, more than that and the internet connection start being flaky. But the overhead seems to be quite big with Knemo reporting upload speeds between 15 and 35KB/s. I've disabled everything that could cause an overhead; μTP, DHT, peer exchange, resolve host name of peers, but it's still there. Disabling the peer exchange did improve the download speed a little bit, as shown on the image below, but it isn't very stable.
Another thing I noticed is the connection limits are not at all what we get in the end. For instance with a global limit of 300 there are maximum 100 to 150 connections. But putting a global limit of 150 will actually reduce the connections to 50 or so.
Some more info on my setup : The 1st router is configured to discriminate bittorrent trafic against other traffic, so as not to disturb internet traffic when someone else is connected, though most of the time there's only my computer running, and for the tests there was only Ktorrent accessing the network.
Download : No Limit, Upload : 7, connections per torrent : 120, Max connections : 300, Max number of connection setups : 25, Max downloads : 4, Max seeds : 1, Number of upload slots : 2 Port : online scanner lists it as open UDP tracker port : not listed as open by online scanners, though netstat and the router UPnP lists it as open
Can't think of anything else. Ideas to solve this are most welcome.

I'm struggling with the same issue! When I was using Debian Lenny my download speeds were usually around 1200kB/s with ktorrent 3.5.x. Now with Debian Squeeze and ktorrent 4.0.2 I can rarely exceed 300kB/s. All my settings are identical and every other client gives me speeds over 1000kB/s. It feels like I've tried everything but nothing works.
Also, I have this same issue on my laptop with Ubuntu: ktorrent 3.5 was fast, ktorrent 4 is slow as hell.
@Bobg : yeah same here... I've given transmission-qt a go and it's a world of difference, consistent 400 to 500 KB/s since I launched it 30 minutes ago. Shouldn't have stuck with ktorrent all these months while it was horribly broken.
@George : the version I have atm is 4.0.5-3, 4.1 isn't available yet in the debian sid repositories. I'll sure give it a try when it is, as I love the ktorrent interface. I will however try some other torrent downloaders, qbittorrent & vuze to see how they compare.

4.1~rc1 has been available in experimental for a while. 4.1 has been uploaded to experimental a few moments ago.
Hmm, this gets weird. I noticed that ktorrent was running fine on 32bit Debian Squeeze but as soon as I switched back to 64 bit Squeeze it was slow again. I was running the same version (4.0.2) on same machine on both occasions.
Now I am trying 4.1.1 from Debian backports but it seems to be quite slow also (on 64 bit kernel)

Weird...
Are you sure the firewall is not blocking ktorrent ports?

Yes, I am sure.
The only difference was 32bit vs. 64bit Debian installation. Naturally this might be something Debian or even kernel related. Or my machine is somehow non-standard.
I'm using KTorrent for the first time. My OS is PXLinuxOS 2011.06 KDE 'MiniMe'. Just browsing the Forum for settings info. Generally my download speed is 1.3MB's/sec. for a file, using Firefox. I've been fiddling with settings carefully for a few days, as the download speed is stated on the 'Status' page as 56.34 KiB/sec. I've a ADSL 2 connection, with a good Modem, enabled if I wan't to wirelessly connect to a home network, but I have no other Comps or appliances, so it's straight from the cable to modem, through Ethernet cable to computer.
Quite a big difference 1.3 MB's/sec to 56.34 KiB/sec. I understand it's dependant on how many 'Seeders' there are plus their speed. Says 9 (43) Seeders. Anyway just an introduction really, will look around Forum for specific info for fastest settings. I have the download speed set at 400 KiB/s on the Network Page, after using 'Recommended Settings' button , and running calculate within that module.
