Ubuntu 10.10 I have the standard ktorrent that Ubuntu has in its repositories.
Ktorrent has been operating just fine, up until a few days ago when it just disappeared from my desktop display. I can see the Ktorrent Down Arrow Icon in the status area on the right top part of my panel and I can click on it and get the drop down menu, but double clicking on it no longer displays ktorrent in operation. I used the drop down menu to shut ktorrent down, then reinstalled ktorrent and everything associated with it, but to no avail. It does not display itself nor is there a minimized version on the launch bar waiting to be clicked on. Any ideas? |

I have a partial solution but I don't know how long it will last...
If I click on a new torrent, ktorrent appears when I add it to ktorrent! So far, ktorrent sticks around afterward... And by the way, I also checked to see if more than one incidence of ktorrent was running in the processes, and their wasn't more than one. Ktorrent did this disappearing thing during the recent time period while http://www.bluetack.co.uk/ site was down and the retrieve window was going nuts trying to download the most recent bluetack version for IP filtering. After the little download window had opened and closed rapidly a ton of times, ktorrent itself disappeared leaving only the download window appearing and disappearing as it tried and failed to achieve it's goal. I had started and shut the program down several times, over the following few days of bluetack outage, and then I noticed ktorrent wasn't appearing, but the download window was, but bluetack was still on up, so I thought this function was suppressing ktorrent's start somehow. Then yesterday, when I tried ktorrent, the download window completed it's attempt but ktorrent did not appear. I shut it down and tried again to the same end. I then started trying different things I have already mentioned. The other problem was, while the download window was appearing and disappearing rapidly, I tried to shut that function down by clicking the drop down menu on the download icon and going into configure ktorrent. But the IP Filter options were grayed out and I couldn't disable the automatic download function to stop the chatter of the bluetack upgrade window. |

It is ktorrent 4.0.3
Although I having no trouble with ktorrent now other than the fact with the bluetac down, the loading window rapidly opens and closes creating a chattering effect, and while this is happening the IP Filter is grayed out, so that it is not possible to disable the enable box for peer guardian and the address is also grayed out so it can not be edited either! As for ktorrent disappearing, I have discovered how that happened. Why the loading window is chattering, if you click the X on the window to terminate the program, ktorrent disappears but the little loading window remains chattering. Then if you click on the icon in the status window for ktorrent and on the drop down window click on QUIT, the program is finally killed. BUT when you try to re-launch ktorrent it is invisible as all you see is the chattering loading window. The solution to that is to again click on the status icon and on the drop down menu click on RESTORE. That makes ktorrent visible again. I forget now, how I originally got ktorrent visible again before I discovered this. (Sorry. In the beginning I had no idea what RESTORE was for.) However, the inability to stop the loading window from rapidly opening and closing though, uses a bunch of CPU resource on this machine. So, I have had to shut ktorrent down until bluetack comes back. Not being able to disable the loading window would seem to be a significant problem during the times a site is down......if they went out of business, I suppose one could delete ktorrent's configuration file to get back control of the program, but I would think one would loose everything that was in progress.... I hope this helps! I really like ktorrent! |

Just a note, I've shutdown ktorrent too, because the copy bluetack copy failure was tying up the processor. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and whatever their current version of kTorrent is. I've noticed the problem when the system starts up, and yesterday when the schedule opened access at midnight (that's why I'm searching on it today).
If the new version has a better failover mode, I might see about manually installing it, but it's a real problem on my system, and very worrying to see it banging away on the screen! Jim |

Hi JimD!
Yesterday, I shutdown ktorrent and went to ~/.kde/share/config and opened ktorrentrc with gedit, and began to read downward, about 9 groupings of text down, I found [IPFilterPlugin] IPFilterPluginEnabled=true and changed it to [IPFilterPlugin] IPFilterPluginEnabled=false and SAVED. Then I restarted ktorrent and the IP Filter Section was gone and so was the chatter problem. I assume that probably means there is no IP Filtering at all now....which has a sensation akin to like running through a crowd with your pants down... ![]() |

You should upgrade to 4.1 or 4.0.5, there is a fix in those release which make the IP filter auto update behave better, when things go wrong.
