Using Magnet Links

Wed Feb 22, 2012 12:35 am
Hello all,

Last night, and for quite some time, magnet links won't work. Magnet links won't download anything. After a little investigation I noticed I did have the magnet protocol properly configured for KTorrent as the magnet link would show up in the Magnet section of KTorrent immediately.

I tried using some Magnet links to download torrents however very few of them started and sometimes they would take hours or overnight to start. Going through my network settings I noticed KTorrent has a new UDP Tracker port. Adding this port to my firewall directing it to my PC allowed the Magnet links to work quickly and perfectly. It required a KTorrent restart once I opened the port though. I suspect you may be able to stop and start the magnet links.

In case anyone was wondering.

P.S. I tried stuffing some keywords into this post so it may end up on search engines.

UDP tracker port has nothing to do with magnet links, the only port which is relevant is the DHT port. That should be open and DHT should be enabled, and things should work pretty fast, though it depends on how many DHT nodes you have.

Hi.

I got the same problem. Magnets appears at the bottom of ktorrent, under "magnet" section, but never start.

It's not all magnets, some works great (3 on 8 tested). For the 3 that worked, the download speed is perfect so it's not a port problem.

I'm using last Kubuntu 64, fresh install 1 week ago, with chrome.

I don't know how magnets work but it may be a tracker problem?

I've tried with Transmission and the magnets don't work. So it's not a ktorrent problem but maybe from the tracker?

If it can help, the magnets have the publicbittorrent tracker announce, from publicbt.com

Post some magnet links for torrents which don't work, so I can try them myself.
