not sure how current/true this is but ....................

could this be a Unity feature where only white listed apps are shown in the system tray?

https://www.google.com/search?client=op ... 39&bih=996

to quote http://www.fewt.com/2011/03/whitelist-u ... -apps.html
<snip>
Ubuntu Natty will enforce a whitelist which will effectively disallow applications that normally use the notification area from displaying icons in your panel. This change is simply an attempt to force open source software developers to redesign their applications to fit into the Ubuntu vision of how software should be designed rather than how the rest of the community designs software.

Now Ktorrent is whitelisted. But still doesn't work. I don't know why, but I have to click 2 times on ktorrent icon from unity panel to launch application or from terminal and may be therefore it doesn't start tray icon. May be the latest version 4.3.0 is bugy.

Might be a Unity issue, no idea - can only say that it works fine in the XFCE panel.

Suggest you post on Ubuntu forum as you're not going to find many users of the Unity panel here.

do you have sni-qt installed?

Qt StatusNotifierItem plugin
A Qt plugin which turns all QSystemTrayIcon into StatusNotifierItems (appindicators)
