Ubuntu Natty will enforce a whitelist which will effectively disallow applications that normally use the notification area from displaying icons in your panel. This change is simply an attempt to force open source software developers to redesign their applications to fit into the Ubuntu vision of how software should be designed rather than how the rest of the community designs software.
