Can anyone tell me what the most advanced 3D
design package that is available for Linux today? It is unlikely that a package of the level of AutoDesk's Inventor would be out there but what is the next best? Neville |

As far as I'm aware there's basically no free-software 3D CAD packages...
Blender is very good, but it's not a CAD program, it's more designed towards artistic 3D stuff -- depending on what you want to do it might still be worth a look. There's also several plugins to make it more suitable for CAD afaik, but overall I think the measurement / constraint etc tools are not too great for CAD purposes. You might also be able to run a commercial windows-only tool in wine, look on appdb.winehq.org for info on whether it runs or not.
I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

Old topic but I didn´t see FreeCAD mentioned. Next best thing.
