After activating the Open Headers plugin, you are able open for editing .h, .cpp, and .c files. Nothing more than that.

"ctags with kate?" See How to use ctags in kate

Let me ask my own question about Kate if you wouldn't mind...

I just set VI mode on, and yes I can use most of the VI commands with Kate now. However, I cannot seem to search the next instances of a word. I _am_ able to hit '/' and a keyword to begin search, but hitting 'n' does not go find the next instance(s). I'd imagine it's supposed to work? Any idea?

As I recall, once you enable that plugin you go to "Configure Shortcuts..." and you can assign a shortcut of your choice that will open the relevant .h or {.c,.cpp} file. There might be a shortcut already assigned.
