Using Remote Control with Windows

Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:44 am
Have for years used amaroK with lirc, but have now discovered that amaroK is available also for Windows. In Linux I use this type of command to append a folder to the playlist:
Code: Select all
amarok -a /path/

How to do this in Windows?

Since the command line use is a bit special in Windows, how about using the File Browser in Amarok? You should be able to go to a specific folder from there, right click on the folder should give you the option to add it to the playlist.

FWIW: it is not amaroK but Amarok since about 6 years now :)

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

That command should work fine in Windows, though. I think the Windows installer adds the bin directory to the %PATH%, so you should be able to just run that command. If not you'll need to add it or use the full path to the Amarok executable.

Thanks Mamarok! I can understand your sugestion in either of two ways.

1. If I could navigate to the Local Collection I could navigate to a folder of choice by sending down (or up) commands with the remote. I can then add the folder to the playlist with enter (have not figured out what command to send with the remote to get to the context menu - but enter works just as well). Problem is only how to get to the Local Collection with the remote.

2. I could send Ctrl-o which opens the Music Library in Windows Explorer. I have struggled to find a way to continue, but finally found that sending the TAB command will eventually get me to a folder from which I can start to navigate with down (or up) commands and choose with enter. Then select all files with Ctrl-a and they will be added to the playlist. This is a bit messy but works, but I would prefer 1.) if I could only figure out to get to the Local Collection

Thanks Sentynel! No it is not added to the %PATH% so I have been using the path to amarok all along.

I would prefer to use the command line approach as I can then send the numerical keys as commands to open to different folders. It works rather well to send the first command, but not the second (to a diffent folder). It seems that I have to exit amarok and then send the (second) command. So not to run out of default keys I have had to introduce an amarok mode (which I usually try to avoid in windows) and use 0-9 in the amarok mode for different folders. An example (am using Hauppauge remote):
Code: Select all
1={close(amarok.exe)}{run(C:\Progra~2\Amarok\bin\amarok.exe "C:/Users/Krister/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Rod Stewart/")}

I have to press key 1 twice, but as the mode is still amarok it finds the famarok command. For long paths I have to use forwardslash rather than backslash, which for some reason stops the IR working. It does not seem to matter if using the option "a" or "-a" or no option at all.

When you say it works the first time - is that with Amarok not running, or after starting Amarok it works once and then fails? If the former, it sounds like interprocess communication might not be working properly. You'd have to ask the KDE Windows team if that is the case.

Yes, with first time I mean that when I start Amarok running I can get it start with the folder of the command line, but I cannot append the playlist while Amarok is running. Thus pressing twice. The first executes close(amarok.exe) only and the second one restarts Amarock with the (new) playlist folder. I can live with pressing the key twice
