how to connect to daap

Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:00 pm
Hi...
I am new to Amarok, using Windows 7 64bit. I enabled the daap plugin, but I am unable to get it to show up in the interface.
The daap server on my network does not have a password set.

Can anyone help?

Which server is used to run the DAAP server (iTunes, Firefly, etc)?

Is the DAAP (Firefly) server set to announce itself, and could there be a firewall (from a internet security product, or the system one) interfering?

Hi there -

thanks for the reply. There's no option in the firefly server config for anything about announcing. There's 4 options under daap:

Under Daap:
Ordered Playlists: YES
Empty strings: No
Supports update: YES
Supports browse: YES

Also, I can connect iTunes to it just fine, as well as the Java Firefly client, so it doesn't appear to be a firewall issue.

I do note that in Amarok, it finds my local drives, but not my network mapped drive.

Does the following command output include an entry involving a "iTunes Audio Access" entry?
Code: Select all
avahi-browse -a -t

You also might find it helpful to restart Amarok, and make sure the "avahi-dnsconfd" service is running on your system.

Well, I think we are getting closer... I don't have that service, and avahi-browse doesn't exist on my computer.

Was the Amarok installer supposed to install avahi?

If not, where can I get a Windows binary? Google is not being helpful...

OK - so I downloaded BonjourBrowser and it does see the iTunes / Firefly server. It also confirms that no password is set, etc.

I installed it on another Windows 7 machine, and when th eprogram boots up, it gives me a warning about how %appdata%\amaarok\ is not writable as it tries to parse out temporary files.

Just not sure what else to try...

Oops, sorry - I thought for some reason this was on a Linux system.

Given that you can see it using the BonjourBrowser, it should work. My guess is that part of the stack used by Amarok to search for devices using Bonjour/Avahi is missing on Windows possibly - I'd prefer one of the developers confirmed this though.

Just for kicks, I powered up a VM of Ubuntu and Amarok sees the daap server right away:

+ eth0 IPv4 GSH Airport Apple AirPort local
+ eth0 IPv4 nas-XX (Transmission) _transmissionserver._tcp local
+ eth0 IPv4 ReadyNAS Discovery [nas-XX] _readynas._tcp local
+ eth0 IPv4 NAS Itunes Server on nas-XX _rsp._tcp local
+ eth0 IPv4 NAS Itunes Server on nas-XX iTunes Audio Access local
+ eth0 IPv4 nas-XX (AFP) _device-info._tcp local
+ eth0 IPv4 nas-XX (AFP) Apple File Sharing local

So it doesn't appear to be a network issue...

It is a distinct possibility that Amarok on Windows is built without DAAP support, but only the Windows developers (for Amarok) will be able to confirm this. If this is the case, the only fix would be to get a version built with DAAP support.

JFYI: I split up the last 2 posts as they are not related to Amarok on Windows at all. New under viewtopic.php?f=115&t=118513&p=296922#p296922

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...
