Improvement on Okular bookmarks

Tue Mar 13, 2012 3:18 am
I'm currently working on a feature (Bug #157198) for Okular bookmarks. You may have notice that when you add a page to bookmark, okular doesn't remember the position where you bookmarked the page.
This is a bit annoying and sometimes you can forget what you really saved to bookmark (see Bug #157198 for more info).

I'm developing a way to save the viewport position instead of just the page number. With this okular can remember exactly where you bookmarked.

Unfortunately this will change the behavior. As of now, if you right click on a bookmarked page the 'Remove bookmark' option will appear instead of 'Add bookmark'. But with this change one page can have as many bookmarks as the user wants. So isn't possible to replace the 'Add' to 'Remove' action unless the user is precisely on the position where the bookmark was saved. The same apply to Ctrl+B shortcut, which toggles between add/remove a bookmark.

I think you all got an overview of what's bugging me right now.

Here's some proposed solutions:
- The bookmark can be only removed from the bookmarks sidebar. The menubar will only show the 'Add' option. Ctrl+B will only add a position to bookmark.

or

- We show the user the 'Remove' option if he's exactly at the bookmark position.

or

- There will be two kinds of bookmark: A page bookmark, exactly how it is today. And a positional bookmark with a new option on menubar and new shortcut.

or

any other suggestion?

This is, IMO, the most intuitive and simple way for going ahead with this. +10

And THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for this feature!!! Really needed it. ^-^

Hi,

Using the existing functionality of the reviews feature in Okular, you can set a "special note" with a distinguishing icon marking the position of every bookmark. That way, you can have multiple bookmarks in a page and be able to remove any bookmark just removing the note. I hope this makes sense.

Cheers.

Hello,

I agree with sevmpe. Annotations and highlights can do the work.
The only problem is that okular don't follow PDF specifications for annotations and highlights (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151614).

If you want to improve Okular, this is the most voted bug for okular. If the maximum votes allowed per person would be 20 instead of 10 it could be in the KDE's top ten bugs list.

my 2 cents,

Joan

I know the feeling, bro :)

Sure, you can use okular annotations as a workaround to save the viewport but that's not intuitive. At least not for me neither for the guy who filed the bug (Bug #157198).

@jmaspons
Actually someone is working on PDF annotations already and that bookmarks bug is another thing that should be improved as well.

I vote for A. That, plus the ability of deleting the bookmarks by right-clicking the menu entries, is more than enough and not as obfuscated as the other two.

Great feature, btw! Just recently I thought I'd love to have that one.

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

I vote for the first option too.

@mailson Great to know that somebody is working in the annotations front!

I vote for 2: I often go exactly to the bookmark (using Alt+Up and Alt+Down as shortcuts for "Previous Bookmark" and "Next Bookmark") and then decide to remove it using Ctrl+B. It would be a pain in my neck if this possibility would disappear.

Certainly don't go for option 3: it would be incredibly confusing to have two bookmark systems in one app.

I think options A and B can live together. I don't use Ctrl+B to remove a bookmarks but some people do, so it's not a good choice to remove it. Also that approach will prevent users from adding duplicate bookmarks for the same location.

Hi guys, I'm just here to say that this feature was implemented and can be found in KDE 4.9

The approach used was the second option. The bookmarks are now positional (although old page bookmarks still works) and to remove it you need to be at the exact bookmark position (you can get there by clicking in the bookmark in the sidebar).

I hope you guys are enjoying this feature (I use it a lot).
