Using KDE4.
Received a pdf of 100+ pages and needed to print them as hardcopy. Been googling for a long while but unable to find how to print out as handouts e.g. 3 pages into 1 page. Any suggestions appreciated. |

I use Acrobat Reader for printing pdf files. (I know it is not OSS.) It has lots of options in the print window. In the "Page Scaling" drop down menu, select "Multiple pages per sheet". Then you have additional choices of page arrangements on the sheet.

Okular can do this as well. In Okular > File > Print, Expand the Options if needed, then select the Pages tab. It should provide the desired option.

bcooksley, you are correct that in Okular > File > Print, Expand the Options if needed, then select the Pages tab. It should provide the desired option. however, when trying to print a 100+ pages pdf to a smaller pdf (4 pages into 1), the output is still 100+ pages. My bad, should have be more specific that I do not have a printer and will need to export the final (smaller) pdf document and mail to my brother living nearby, for printing. Eventually, understands from openSUSE forum that it works ONLY when the printing is in hardcopy. Printing to another pdf does NOT work. Any idea why the constraint? |

The constraint is because KDE implements the multiple pages on one sheet option through CUPS. PDF printing is done directly, and thus is not affected by this option.

KPDF from kdegraphics3 (KDE3) prints multiple pages to PDF without problems whereas Okular does not. Presumably they use different means to do so.

KPDF uses the older KDEPrint system, which was deprecated due to lack of maintainer with the move to KDE 4. This was aided by Qt 4 containing printing support. Unfortunately this support, whilst sufficient to enable printing in KDE applications, does not have as many features as the older KDEPrint system.

You can use evince to print in a file and change the page layout. This will work just fine.
