have you tried tools full screen mode in still picture
in my gentoo system kde-4.1.2 okular works full screen mode presentation also.
i have only ubuntu-8.04 installed.
i will check with that and post later.
it seems to be working fine.

yes okular default start size is 1/4 size left top corner
use fullscreen mode ,zoom resize of window etc.

full screen is working correctly. Its the presentation mode which is the culprit. Is this a kde bug or a ubuntu bug?

I can confirm this - there have been some bugs reported:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/286502
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172894
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161868

..might be a kubuntu problem?

I have Kubuntu 8.10, but cant replicate the bug. If you are using X11 with an intel driver try switching to vesa. Looks like this is related to : http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172894

How do I change to vesa. If I do that will I lose anything in terms of graphics capability.
