It seems that Okular does not use the KDE default webbrowser anymore to open external links, and doesn't use mailcap either. I can't find how to specify which application to use. E.g., an avi file is opened directly in Totem movie player, and an animated gif in okular itself, thus not getting animated... whereas I have different defaults in my webbrowser which used to allow me to open hyperref files as I like.
This is especially problematic when giving a beamer presentation, for which okular used to be the best choice for me.

Is there any way to define preferred file types ? (Btw, I'm not running KDE but XFCE, which is probaby not making things easier).

And by the way, why is the mailcap file now disregarded by most applications, KDE or not ? It seems to me it really made sense to have one central file where to manage default preferences, even if a user may want to override them within some specific application.

Where have you set the default applications? Has this been done in System Settings > Default Applications and System Settings > File Associations?

If so - Okular should follow them.

Well, I'm running XFCE, not KDE.

Thanks anyhow, it is correct that the desktop environment's setting that is being used. Under XFCE, the only way I've found to set it is to use the file manager to browse to a file of the targeted type, right click to "Open with other app", and choose a new default setting.

The weird file associations, such as okular for gif files, seem to come from XFCE actually.

The reason KDE is respecting some of the preferences set by XFCE is because there is a XDG specification on file associations I believe, which likely explains this.
