Missing space between words in annotations

Hello,

I am running Okular 1.6.70 from Okular_Nightly_win32 on Windows 10 1809.

I am adding annotations with LaTeX codes (mainly math stuffs) to a pdf document. Whenever I try to render it, the LaTeX codes are compiled but the spaces between words are missing. For example, in the annotation I write "Hello world: $$e=mc^{2}$$", but after rendering I see "Helloworld:e=mc^{2}". The equation e=mc^{2} is successfully compiled but all the spaces between words are gone.

I also tried to render equations that contain spaces. It turns out that the equation is rendered, but all the spaces are replaced with "?". For example, I try to render "$$e = m c^{2}$$" but get "e?=?m?c^{2}". Could all these problems be because my TeX distribution (MiKTeX 2.9) doesn't recognize spaces? (unlikely since I have never run into this when working with LyX.) Or is it simply a compatibility issue on Windows system?

Thanks a lot.
