Date displayed

Wed May 14, 2014 12:29 pm
Bonjour,

I am migrating from Windows XP to Kubuntu 14.04: what a tough job !! Too many problems to solve ...
I must be soon able to help many people of my assocation to do the same ...

I inserted the CF memory card of my camera in the card reader of my PC.
With digiKam, in the window called Images on USB Disk..., the date for all photos is 31/12/1979 23:00 !!!! How can I correct this bug ? Why the true shooting date is not displayed ?

With Thunderbird, in the list of received emails, the date format is mm/dd/yy, this is very confusing for me. How can I get the dd/mm/yy date format ? Is it a problem of Thunderbird or a problem of KDE ? I tried to modify date, country settings: no result.

For Thunderbird, i'm not sure what settings it follows - but likely not the KDE ones located in System Settings. Please see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format for more information on setting the date format in Thunderbird.

As for Digikam, if you open the CF Card in Dolphin, what dates are displayed there?

Bonjour,

Thank you Ben for your answer.
______________

In page http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format I understand that the date format is the format available from the OS ... I'll consider this problem later.
______________
In Dolphin both dates of photo files in my CF card are displayed correctly; in french:
- Date et heure de l'image
- Date ete heure originales

And I just discover now that there are now also correct in digiKam, because yesterday I changed some localisation parameters !
This problem is solved.

My best regards,
Pierre

Ben,

Excuse me, the error is still there !!
In the main window of digiKam the photo dates are correct.
In the import window:
- the date underneath each photo is 32/12/1979 23:00 except for the last folder of memory card for which the date is correct !!!!!!
- at the right, the dates for the photo selected are:
* 31/12/1979 23:00 for the file date !!
* 23/09/2013 11:17:33 for the photo date (correct)

Isn't it a bug in digiKam ? What I see is not logical !!

Why do not display the photo date, the only date important for a photo.

Regards,
Pierre

Okay, this does indeed sound like it could be a bug/feature of Digikam. If you look at the file dates in Dolphin (rather than the photo dates) are those also incorrect?

Bonsoir Ben,

I am now away from home for 2 weeks, unable to use my Kubuntu PC. I'll answer you when I am back home.
From what I remember, in Dolphin both dates of photo files in my CF card are displayed correctly; in french:
- Date et heure de l'image
- Date et heure originales

Okay - not a problem. I suspect the two dates it showed you came from the photo metadata rather than the file itself.

Bonjour Ben,
With DigiKam:
For the first photos of the camera memory card, in the import window, the date displayed underneath the photo is 31/12/1979, for the last photos the date is correct. It is the same date displayed in the frame on the right for the photo file properties.
In the frame on the right, the date for the photo properties is always correct.

With Dolphin:
The date displayed in the only date column available is correct. When a photo is selected, in the frame on the right both dates displayed are correct.

So considering all that, I consider there is a bug in DigiKam !!

Considering later photos have the correct date in Digikam, it is possible that the camera time was set incorrectly or something similar. If it was a Digikam bug i'd expect it to show consistently across all the photos. If the issue recurs with newer photos after you copy everything off, then it would be a bug in Digikam.

Could you perform a test (take some new photos and see if they have the issue)?

Bonjour Ben,

I just took 2 photos, the date displayed underneath each photo is 31/12/1979 !!!
When selecting one of these 2 photos, on the right:
+ In photo file properties the date is 31/12/1979 !!!
+ In photo properties the date is 07/06/2014

The date and time set in the camera are correct.

If it is not a problem of Digikam, why everything is correct when using ZoomBrowser in Windows (application supplied with the Canon camera) or another application ?

Anyway, why underneath each photo don't you display the shooting date (= correct date in photo properties), it is the only date which interests the photographer for selecting photos !! Any other information is almost useless.
Allow a date choice in options of import window.

Okay, this explains a few things. Dolphin is capable of displaying both dates. I don't know why Digikam would be displaying the file date i'm afraid - I suggest filing a bug report / feature request against it asking for the embedded photo metadata date to be used instead.

The date/time (and indeed many other items) that are displayed at various places in digiKam is very configurable.

I would suggest initially checking these settings.

From: Settings => Configure digiKam

=> Album View

=> Tooltip => Icon | Album | Import

=> Cameras => Import Window

I'm afraid I've altered my own settings quite a lot, so I'm not sure of the defaults :)

I thank you for your answers.

Using the DigiKam configuration parameters does not solve my problem, the choices are to display dates or not, I understand there is no choice of date.
As Ben suggests me, I am filing a bug report, and asking for new features in DigiKam (I understand they do not exist):
- Being able to automatically create a subfolder for each shooting date of imported photos, the subfolder name being the shooting date in format 2014-06-09.
- Being able to name the photos imported (with shooting date and time, or with a typed prefix and a number) as this can be done with different applications for importing photos from a camera.
- In the import window, having files sorted by shooting date and time instead of by name (name are of different types for simple photos, multiple photos for panoramas, videos: IMGxxxx; STAxxxx, STBxxxx, ...; MVIxxx). Sorting files by name gives a meaningless list.

Papipio,

OK, sorry that was not of help to you.

For what it's worth... I've just tried, unsuccessfully, to duplicate the bug you described.
I'm using digiKam Version 4.0.0 (Build date: May 20 2014), Using KDE Development Platform 4.13.1

I see the correct date/time for the image creation (as in EXIF data) shown below the thumbnail image on the 'Import' window. This is for images imported directly from camera, or from the camera's memory card via a card reader.

Once imported into digiKam both image creation and file creation date/time are shown correctly; below thumbnails in album view, in the tool-tip, and in the 'Properties' panel.

I'm only a casual user of digiKam, so I'm unable to offer any other ideas to try :)

There is a quite active users mailing list, you could try asking there prior to filing a bug report.

Bonjour,

Four images to be sure of being understood:
