Hello,
I was using digikam for years and I appreciate a lot this wonderfull software. Unfortunatly, my photo collection has grown in the last years, and now Digikam is unusable... take hours to launch trying to scan the collection and finaly crashes. I have about 220000 files in my photo collection, for a total of 485GB. These files are stored on a local hard disk (SATA 7200RPM), and I have a descent computer ( Intel i7 3.2GHz, 8GB RAM, running Cubuntu 14.10), and digikam is using a MySql database located on a different server, over a gigabit network. I am using digikam 4.4.0 (kde platform 4.14.1) on Cubuntu 14.10 running cinnamon desktop. In this version of Digikam, there is no option anymore to avoid initial scanning, because Digikam is doing the scanning in background. But the launch stil take between 15 to 30mn... And then, it start scanning files in background, which takes forever, and generaly end up crashing. By the time being, I can not seen the thumbnails in the folders... so I can not use digikam anymore. What can I do to be able to use digikam again on my large photo collection ? Will it be possible to improve digikam to allow it to manage hudge photo collections. Here what I would suggest: - Allow to disable automatic scanning - be able to launch scanning durng the night - when user click on a folder, digikam only scan this folder in realtime, if the data are not already present in the database, making digikam usable even if the initial scanning has not been fully performed What do you think ? Any help will be greatly appreciated ! Thanks in advance. Bernard |

for an outlier case like this I'd suggest the mailing list or irc
