Linking digikam to a remote pc

Tue Nov 20, 2018 2:42 am
Hi
I couldn't find any good guide for linking digikam /database to a remote pc using vpn/lan connection.

So here is the problem. The work with the remote disk is very slow. I tried simply open digikam and choose in settings the remote disk. It started syncing but there are so many files there so I have no idea how much time it will take to link it. maybe weeks.

So I was thinking if I launch this program on my remote computer first. I will add the same folder and because this folder is not remote for this pc it will take short time to sync and create a database. So I did.
It synced and created SQLite db in the folder and subfolders. But what now? I know nothing about databases in this program and don't understand their mechanics.

So then I opened digikam here on my pc (which is linked to that remote pc over vpn to lan disk) and now it shows me the msg that there is an error of opening database and it is trying to automatically re-connect it. And nothing happens for a quite a long time.

Please understand that there are two different things in digikam:
- database
- collection(s)
Database is a set of either SQLite or MariaDB .db files
Collection is your actual pictures (and video files)

If you host database on a remote PC it can take a very long time to create thumbnails at first startup and it might work slow afterwards.
So I would recommend to try hosting the database on the local PC and add Collections hosted on the remote PC.

To speed-up the process you might want to try splitting the collection in parts and add them one at the time.

Also I would recommend using the official appimage ver.6.0.0 for now until 6.0.0 makes it to KDE Neon repos.
Ver 6.0.0 has a slightly different database structure.
